I just got back from the John Singer Sargent Exhibition in Seattle. It was AWESOME! I've loved Sargent for so long, and I've vowed that I would see his work in person before I die. Well, now that I have. . .. uh, wait, I don't want to die yet! I still have to see a J W Waterhouse exhibition(IF they EVER put one together).

Seeing his paintings up close is a total revelation. I was very surprised at just how loose the man actually paints. If you get within three feet to the painting, everything just breaks down into bold brush strokes, with almost no coherency and appears out of context, but if you just take a couple of steps back, the painting just snaps into focus and your jaw would drop on the floor. Say what you want about Sargent's association with the rich and powerful, I don't care. The man could paint like a God, and that's all that matters.

For your viewing pleasure, I've taken some pictures. They don't allow cameras in the show, so I have very few interesting shots. What I DO have though, is a small group of our Sijun.com kids looking absolutely adorable and goofy for the camera. Here they are:

Nova, Visionary(did I spell it right?), Kindra? Your comments on the show?

BTW, this thread is suppose
to be the unveiling of a lurker who's been at this forum for about 2 years, without EVER posting a thing. He promised he'll make his debut here in this thread.

Drum roll please. . ..

Unveil yourself!

Wow! That would have been so much fun. I really wish I lived in Seattle.
So is Kindra the one who's been lurking all this time? I don't recognise her name.
Gee it looks pretty cold over there, does it snow usually?

Ahhhh. I can't tell you who the lurker is. You'll have to be patient until the unveiling.

It was a bit colder in Seattle than San Francisco. They just had a storm before I got there, and there were still a tiny bit of snow in little clumps here and there.

Well, the show ends around March 18, so you still have time to round up some other Sijun.com kids and go.

I'm always surprised by how attractive everybody here tends to be. I know that probably sounds weird or offensive, but I always expect sickly, weirdo-looking people. I mean, what do you expect of people that are computer nerds AND artists!?! I'm including myself in all of this. Don't yell at me, I have a headache.

P.S. I wish I could go see this exhibition.

Hahah. I wish, that is if I have a few thousand dollars to burn. I'm in Australia, so that isn't a possibility.

Maybe I'll toddle down there, I work a few blocks down the street and never even been into the Seattle art Museum. You've made it sound interesting. I'll push and shove and pull that wife of mine to go!

How much did it cost?

And I loved the snow the other day. I haven't see that stuff in some time. Driving in it wasn't though!

It's only $12 for adults(non-members). Very, very cheap, considering it is the legendary John Singer Sargent! Definitely go!

I think you twisted my arm, DAMN dude.

never heard of him! not that I'm some art guru. :-)

Well I got plans now to see this Exhibit!
And I didn't even have to twist the wifes arm. She hasn't even been there either! So something new for the both of us. And a good way to get out and get away from them damn pesky kids of ours. They can get a little nerve racking. And a good excuse to play downtown. Listen to some bands a drink beer and what ever I feel the need to do.

Thanks dude for this advice!

Guh, lots of young fresh faced, happy, well adjusted types and very little Sargent.

First time post LONG time viewer

So I suppose I should introduce myself. I go to college with Skeezer Blitz and Nirrad. Ive had classes in high school with Nova (to my right in the picture) and have met with Kindra a few times. Art has always been apart of my life and I enjoy reading some of the comments I see on the forums.

Those of you that missed out on the John Singer Sargent Exhibition Im sorry, that was truly a fantastic experience and Id have to say that Lunatique put it best.

Before I forget I want to thank Lunatique for making it so enjoyable at the exhibition. He was an inspiration for me to watch. Thanks again! Its nice to see guys get passionate over what they love to do.

Its been great watching this place grow.

-Visionary

P.S. Here is an image I worked up while learning how to use the tablet.

P.S.S. oh yeah =) I'm the lurker...

Ah... there you are!

I thought you were gonna be a no show(decided last minute to remain hidden in the shadows, continuing lurking). Glad you made it. Now that you have spoken, don't go back into silence again, ok?

You are welcome. I'm very happy that my love and enthusiasm for art had positive effects on others. Isn't what this is all about though? To inspire each other and have our passion for art rub off on each other?

I like your drawing, especialy the second dude from the left. His pose looks really natural and relaxed(very hard to achieve). Definitely color it.

Now, if you had to say something about what you learned from the Sargent show, what would you say?

For me, it would be a couple of things. 1)Seeing Sargent's work up close, I feel braver. I get this feeling that I want to just grab a brush and paint with abandon and not worry so much about every tiny detail. I truely learned to see the "big picture," instead of concentrating on small areas. 2)All the reprodutions you see in art books--NONE of them does the originals any justice. The original painting will always be more vibrant, glowing, and beautiful. Now I can't look at any of my Sargent book anymore.
3)There are LOTS of VERY attractive girl artists out there. They might not converge in high numbers at a place like Sijun.com, but they sure do at art shows. . .. I lost count of how many I saw at the show. And speaking of that, Visionary, you are one lucky bastard. . .. *wink wink*

Nova? Kindra? You girls are late. Join the party!

oh jeez. i look so stoned.

i was hoping you didn't put that one in particular up, guy

Ah well. The show, yes.. You really can't say much until you go see. I haven't looked at Sargent stuff in a few years, and I forgot all about it. His work is incredible and very very discouraging. It reminded me how much more i have to learn

But still, if you have ANY opportunity to go, please do.. it'll be well worth your cash and your time.. bring a sketchbook and some extra cash for a book or something too. But like Lunatique mentioned when we were there, print doesn't even compare to the incredible colors the guy uses in his paintings..

Yeah, i'll have to agree with Visionary.. Thanks Lunatique for the huge explinations and interpretations.. You reminded me about how passionate I used to be about stuff like this

btw, students pay only 9 dollars to get in (with your asb card or whatever..)

Awww. It's ok, Nova. You still looked adorable. Just remember not to smoke any crack before taking pictures next time, ok?

Here, a better picture so people don't think you always look like that.

USED to be passionate about art? Hmm. You guys all visit here and draw on a regular basis, so I'd say you are far from being dispassionate.

Now, where is that Kindra girl?

Come on guys - you're faces were lame. I was the only one that went all out and now look at me *crys*

I feel like a freak...

the other pictures only made me look worse. I do like the one of Nova eating the invisible hamburger.

So I talked to a few friends and they told me they did not even know about the museum. Really, I wish people would take the time too check out ALL the topics instead of just the final image folder. There is lots to learn - even in the misc. files!

*takes a short bow*
