Hello, I just found this board a few days ago, and I have to say that you guys are amazing. You make me want to learn to paint, which is something that I was never intereseted in. Anyways, I've tried to sketch with my tablet, a graphire, and I can tell that i'm gonna need a lot more practice with it. So i'd rather just scan my pecils in. Can anyone recommend a good scanner for artwork? I searched the faq and past threads, but i couldn't find anything. I'm just a poor colledge student so I couldn't spend more that $200-$250. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

I have heard the Epson Perfection 1200U is a decent buy. I think it scans at 1200 x 2400. I think it will be ~$250 (US) .... Might be able to pick it up for cheaper... not sure how it looks .... sleek, etc... |

I'm fond of the SnapScan series by AGFA. I've got a 1236S, which uses a blistering fast SCSI 2. The same scanner is available with USB connectivity.
32 bit, 1200X600 optical.... 2400 interpolated. Not sure why, but it scans like an optical 1200, which is what you want. I do a lot of B&W scanning and it is the best scanner I've ever own for this. Nice color definition too, and the software runs rings around my old HP and Epson.
BTW, this scanner might be hard to find now, but I've seen it at $160 where it was originally $250+. Offers excellent expandibility as well... optional auto document feeder and slide scanner adapter.
The only downside is it's standard bed size.

If you've only got $250 to spend (I'm hoping that's $250 US, not Canadian....), then I'd suggest looking into used scanners. Often, you can find this year's models, barely used, for a fraction of the retail price. I, for example, bought a Hewlett Packard model for $650, then sold it a week later when I was offered a much better deal. I sold it for $200.... So, do poke around--there are some good deals out there. Just make sure you ask to see the thing working first. Either that, or (if it's REALLY new) get the receipt, box, and warranty. Then, even if it doesn't work, you can take it back and get more money than you started with. (Er...is that legal?)
Okay. I'll stop rambling now. I've been awake TOO LONG.

Thanks for all the info. Its really helpful.
The Epson Perfection sounds pretty good. Has anyone used one of these?
The snapscan is a little hard to find. I can get one off the internet, but I try to stay away from buying things off the internet.
If i were to buy a used scanner, which model would you recommend?
Thanks

$200 is actually a pretty good budget for a scanner these days.
Canon scanners are pretty good, but I'm partial to Umax scanners because of the software. I just got a Umax 2100 and it's great but a little big. The Canon's are very small by comparison and, if you get USB, require no external power supply. |
