Didn't he invent the lens flare?
If not I give him explicit permission.

It was a nasty Photoshop bug. Back in version 4.0 Photoshop would just go nuts creating random lens-flares all over the place. I know I had my share of encounters with that.. bug.. uhh.. shhh, just go with it.
Gotcha covered Craig-meister!

A new thread for this?
I did this in 96, I think. At that time, lens flares were not the hunted animals they seem to be now.
Is it bad if it's appropriate? It is not an evil thing in itself.
Being easy to use does not make it off-limits, but being easy to use invites abuse.
So, yes, this cool thing has been soiled through abuse and overexposure. Is that my fault? I suppose I should go through my archives and paint them all out because of other peoples lack of restraint.
This is what I was talking about in the other thread. What other aspects of my work will go this way?
The easiest and most obvious aspects of my work I do see around. But hopefully, I am not just a limited bag of simple tricks. My confidence in that is why I am not too uptight about the whole thing. |

It's true, lens flares were much overused in cheap 3d animations(Lightwave 3-4) long before they became an abomination to other art forms as well.
Craig-I wouldn't worry myself if I were you. Competition's growing, but remember that you basically founded this field(or at least revolutionized it). I haven't seen anyone doing what you were doing 3 years ago(digitally). Maybe a few people trying to catch up to you will cause you to improve even faster.

The only thing I have to put the blame on Mr. Craig's art, is that since I met his pictures I've noticed I try (*inconciously*) to make my DP look like his. I used to love smudged shadows and so, and now I find myself stroking like mad without caring of blending the strokes together. |

Oh no! WHHYY??
Hmm.. I just realized something. If Craig actually left these forums, I'd genuinely be quite sad..is that pathetic? :P
I feel like he offers SOOOOO much of his time and effort to help everyone. He is a very busy guy I suspect, but he always takes the time to help people out. I think that is incredibly cool. I think that's what makes him different from all the other "greats". I mean, when was the last time you saw Frazetta compose a tutorial for a bunch of forum geeks? Exactly.

I never understood these rules of don't use this, don't use that, Ofc. things can be abused..but if you use it for what they are for, does it really mater if you actually brushed it manually or not ? I don't care...

well it depends.. are you trying to parse your painting to look like a photograph? if so I can see the use of lense flares and so on very helpful the percieve the viewer..
but if it a painting, well it looks out of place to me seeing that ive never seen a painting with a lense flar on it
can some people post some more lense flare pics.. mainly in photos.. so we can have a look aty how they should be? |

The last time someone posted a photo with filters he got blasted, so I don't think that will happen again. |

One final thing, on the lens flares. I have to attribute the best use of a lens flare I've seen to Spooge:
Lens flares, like all other filters, are not 'evil' or 'wrong', merely untamed in their natural form. No tool should be discarded: merely put it aside, wait for the right time and use it correctly.
(sorry Freddio, couldn't help myself)

That's an example of a good used flare... but it can be used sooooo badly, in combination with all those other *shiver* filters, it just ain't funny anymore (If it ever was to start with). |

I think a lot of times people disregard what a lens flare is, also. It's for an effect of a LENS. Is there a reason for your art to be seen through a camera? And if so, are you doing it realistically? Are you experimenting with a camera at least to see how you'll have to set the effect up? Is there any reason you can't draw what you need yourself, instead of just using a 'novelty' like filters? It's like throwing clip-art into your fine art. Have some respect for yourself.

i think the main reason behind a lens flare looking so tacky is because they look THE SAME in every picture the artists puts them in. it would be like taking a small texture and seeing it in millions of different works by people. it simply gets annoying after a while.
