I think my eyes will bleed if I stare at another bank of 20 monitors, all running some crudy demo movie on an anchent video card, despereately trying to see differences in colour space and desern level of contrast and anamolies.

As you all know, most of the on-line reviews are padded blatently by the manufacturers. "BIG Corp continues it's long tradishion of.." , Blaw, blaw , blaw, etc, etc, ad-nausium.

So, why not go to those who REALY know?

So, what do you have your eye on, what are you using now, and what are it's streangths and weeknesses.

Thanx,

Rhysling

I really really love my Viewsonic PF790 -- 19" flatscreen professional display -- 1600x1200 @ 70hz -- And for less than $600 too.

I have a Silicon Graphics 1600SW flat panel monitor - 1600 x 1024 widescreen format. I use a little color calibrator that hangs on the screen once a month to tweak the color settings - but unless you have a Silicon Graphics workstation I don't believe you can get your hands on one

Used to swear by Sony monitors, now swear by Viewsonic pro series. Excellent bang-for-the-buck.

I run a Hitachi 19". Outside the super expensive Sony's, I haven't seen a clearer picture. Some of the others are a tad brighter(not really a problem though), but they have those cursed horizontal lines which vex me so. For the money, I suggest the Iyaama 22". A good friend of mine has one, and by his account(I trust his opinion implicitly) it's very clear and bright. It had a purple corner for a bit at first, but after being on for awhile that went away, nere to be seen again.

I use a SGI 1600sw also,Pros:the colors are the richest available of any flatscreen on the market today, due to the fact that it's digital, not analog. The superwide format allows you to have 2 apps open running side by side if you wish. Plus SGI just dropped the price on it, and it comes with a 3dlabs oxygen card. 3 year warranty. A .23 mm dot pitch (110 dpi)Cons:Anything you create on the SGI doesn't look as good on other monitors, so some of the quality is lost when not viewed on the same type monitor.
See: http://www.sgi.com/flatpanel/
I also use a sony HMD-A200/L 17" monitor -
Pros: .24 dot pitch, flat (anti-glare) crt tube, Trinitron, 4 usb connectors.
Cons: 1 year warranty
See: http://www.sonystyle.com/sonystyle/4621/4622/4641/7064.default.html

What you should look for in a monitor is size. In fact, if you can, get a 60" monitor(that would be awesome). The color quality doesn't matter... you can always go over the screen with a magic marker where it doesn't look right.

My Hitachi SuperScan Elite 751 19" Monitor is fookin' awesome. It's by far one of the best monitors I've ever worked with(and I've worked with MANY, at various gaming companies). It's crisp, clear, with awesome contrast/brightness and color accuracy. Other monitors might boast crazy specs, but the only real test is to work on it for long hours, and my Hitachi has more than passed that test.

you can get the sgi flat panel for pc's, it's on my wishlist

anywho, in a crt, you want to get apeture grill and not dot matrix. (they'll usually say .22mm AG). AG uses strands of parallel wires instead of a plate with holes punched in it(dot pitch). this promotes richer brighter colors as well as more depth in contrast. the downside to AG is the horizonal lines somebody mentioned earlier. they are wires that keep the grill straight. i only notice them when i am really looking for it, and a lot of people dont even notice at all, so i dont think its a major drawback.

as far as brands go. i love iiyama. they cant be beat in my book. i've seen quite a few and the iiyama is on top.

if money is no object, get that sgi flatpanel, otherwise, get two of these like me.

I own a piece of crap monitor that is good for nothing more than a strobe light because it flickers so bad.

Headaches, headaches, headaches

*sighs sadly*

Thank for the feedback folks! I'm currently using a 3 year old 17' mag ... had impressive contrast/colour space, once- I carted it around to one to many land parties (weekly, realy),and now it is a little fuzzy.

I used to covet a fiends View-Sonic. It has fairly good colour space, but lacs a bit in contrast. Looking at a KDS and ViewSonic Flat screen side by side, the KDS was a smidged more vibrant. Some have said that KDS does not have a good history. ViewSonic does have those cool little birds, too. Do VS flatscreens differ much from model to model in there colour space?

I have read some good things about Hitachi, with there trailblazing of tech... I just worry that about first generation tech. Still, your words of praise hold alot of waight... very little bad to say about them, 'sept for a bit of Moir on some...

After checking out some reviews for Iiyama, I started shaking nervously. My desire was overpowering my pocket book. BNC connectors for each colour chanel? That would meen a new video card too...I might just have to do that. Anyone have any bad experiances with the Mitsubishi tech used in this screen?

Thank you all again for your time; an extra deep bow and thanx for those of you who added links to your post.

You NEVER go wrong with SONY!

I like the 19" flatscreens and I am very pleased with my "old" 19" 400PS even though it's not totally flat. It runs 1280x1024 at 85Hz and 1600x1200 at 75Hz. I've had it for about 16 months and it's sharp as Einstein's wit.

I have a LaCie Electron Blue 22, it's based off Mitsubishi's 22" flat tube, just Lacie made it blue, bumped up the refresh and give it a hood

You can never go wrong with dual monitors. All your tools on one monitor, your image/video has a monitor all to itself. Since pretty much every app I use has a million tools (painter, photoshop, illustrator, after effects) it helps a lot.

i have a 17-inch WYSE (some type - i don't know which, heh) monitor with a 15.9 (something like that) viewing area. i bought this puppy around 4 - 5 years ago and it's still ticking! pretty good refresh rates 120hz at 6x4 and 8x6 // 80hz at 10x7 and 12x10 // and 60hz at 16x12 all at 32-bit color (the font gets VERY SMALL at this res, but you'll eventually get used to it! i have!). I never knew my monitor could go as high as 16x12 'cause it never displayed it in properties. but once i enabled 'list all modes' i picked it, and amazingly enough, it worked! heh. you can probably pick this monitor up for around $100 at some bargain bin monitor shop

I got me a 19" CTX PR960F.

Am very impressed with the image quality (I run 1600 x 1200 @ 85Hz)

Complaints... well I've had it for 4 months and have already had 2 replacements (each made within 48 hours). One just died, and the other used to drift out of focus... fingers crossed this one is fine.

i've got two monitors, both hooked up to my comp, a 19 incher by Sony (which still, even after 3 years of constant running kicks some serious ass..) and a 15' from hitachi which i got really cheap from my dad's old company when they were selling off all their old crap to get new flatpanels...so now i'm frickin happy, coz i simply moce all my toolbars on the 15' and have my 1???x1024 as a working area....
