You're going to get a million different answers on this. It's like asking what the best food is.
Lightwave is a great package. So is 3D Studio, so is Maya, so it Softimage, so is Hash, etc. They all get the job done.

i'll second that.

if you have a chance, try as many as you can and then decide which one meets your needs and suits your work methods.

I agree with what has been said, but if you don't have access to the ones mentioned, then I suggest buying nendo ($99) and animation master ($199 - $299). Nendo is a good modeller and animation master is really nice for animation (I think it can import models that are exported from nendo) and your investment will be reltively low. Oh, and since you asked, I think Lightwave absolutely rocks. (It's what I use.)

thx for the replies...

the reason i was asking bout lightwave specifically was because that's what they have at the college i'm going to, and they offer a one year course in it, so i was just thinking if it's something i should consider.

I don't think you can go wrong with Lightwave. Great product. If you want to go into games, the most commonly used package (according to all my friends in the biz) is 3D Studio MAX - not the necessarily the best for everything, but like Microsoft WORD... it gets used a lot; I think primarily because of the plug-in architecture.

Go for it.
