I don't know much, but I'd recommend Fathom by Top Cow. Inspired me to try comic stuff.. I gasped, I tried, then I cried

your best bet for getting deals on comics is your local comic shop. you can usually bargain around a bit if you are a frequent customer that they know is spending his milkmoney
as for good comics...what are you looking for exactly? here are my pics....
-artwork: battlechasers, ultamate spiderman (new series) and crossgen comics. topcow has some really good artists too.
-story: frank miller's Dark night (DUH!), current daredevil is good, and Authorities is VERY GOOD...
-classic must-haves: xmen, fathom, JLA, superman, nitewing, batman.
you can ususally have you local shop make you a "mailbox" which is when certain title scome in, they set a copy aside for you....then once or twice a month you stop in and get your "mail". this will guarentee that you get a copy of hot titles that dont stay on the shelf long. things like the spawn 100 and the new punisher line.

"Battle Angel Alita" (or "GUNNM" in Japan) by Yukito Kishiro.
Some of the best sci-fi that sequential art has ever seen. Kishiro's action sequences are unrivaled. Its published by Viz.

Perhaps it's my personal style, but I say that if you wanna find comic books with good art, go buy all the Spawn, Witchblade and The Darkness comic's you can find! I mean, the drawings in these comic books are incredible! I think they're the only comic books that contain good art! But that's just my personal opinion. I happen to love the style they're drawn in, and I know not everyone agree with me on this one.. Try to find something that fits your style!
Take care!
