HELLO I WENT TO ART SCHOOL I AM AN DIGITAL DESIGNER PROFESSIONAL NOW AND I CAN SAY ANYTHING I LIKE HEEHEEHEE!
it beats me to shit and back why somebody would even want to say it with a straight face he's a digital designer..
digital designer could just as well be a ms dos batch file maintainer in a structure of 5000 pc's in it which all need batch files to run some software..

degrees? what do they prove? that you can regurgitate the info forced down your throat by someone who feels you should be told how to think, not why to think?
bleh.
i don't see how a degree fits into this.
but for more information on the philosophy of aesthetics, i recommend http://www.aesthetics-online.org/

No. You just said you were a student of aethetic philosophy, which I presumed to mean that you were engaged in some academic pursuit. Please pardon my unintentional insult. I presume you've had some bad experiences with school.

Yes, that's a very academic site. Lots of good teaching and scholarly links.

hm... community forum no. 2098...
There are only a few forums about (digital) art that really have a lot of users. Makes it really hard to start your own. |

I'm pretty sure I'm going to drop out. You can't really say anything more scalding about digital design than I've already said to my professors... and they've agreed. |

Design isn't art. Degrees don't matter if your portfolio is good. 80% of the curriculum is filler, or redundant, etc.
We critique fucking graduation scales man. We spend 12 hours painting graduation scales with gouache then we critique them. (I've got a stack of unused color chips, painted with $50 worth of gouache, the size of a couple phone directories.) Then we put them in our "portfolio". I don't know about you, but I'm not sending someone a porfolio full of graduation scales. Then again, I'm not going to get a shitty job designing whatever the hell they are training us to do. Be a monkey at a computer, I guess.
Our drawing class is ridiculous. We draw boxes, ribbons, and primitives. You say, "AHA! But those are the fundamentals!" Well, it never changes. We never do live figure drawing, ever. Not next year, never. We learn no anatomy, or organic structure. I've learned more from this forum for free than I have from drawing class.
I sit here, typing this on a $2500 laptop they made us buy, because they are too fucking stingy to provide us computers. Only next year, we have to buy another computer, because they changed their mind about what to teach us.
I supposedly go to school in a top rated, multi million dollar facility. At least, that is what they showed us on the tour. In reality, class is in a decrepid, old building. I sit in classes with a 30:1 student teacher ratio, on not enough broken stools and tables scarred from years of abuse. The floor tiles crack and peel, the lighting sucks, and people steal art supplies from my locker since it's broken with a big hole.
Some facility. Funny this wasn't on the tour.
I just finished printing out 30 black and white "compositions" of regularly spaced, black and white bars for our crit tommorow. Then I can spend $70 on materials to print them all on photo paper and mount them with mack tack. We crit these. They're all the same, but we crit them still.
I found out yesterday that they are going to remove computer animation from the curriculum. So basically, the entire reason I've been putting up with this design crap is now gone. It also means the dean looked me in the eye and lied to me, and that I've spent thousands of dollars on a big bait and switch scam. Even though "making movie special effects like the T. Rex and aliens" is still on the UC website, Digital Design has turned into a 5 year web-design degree. Hmm, I don't think a lot of flash animations went into the T. Rex.
So fuck this.
I don't know man. Bradford, you around? How much does SCAD cost for in state? How long do you have to live there to get that?

I'm living proof of that fact and it's probably why I didn't want to go to any other school than the one I went to. There were some drawbacks but I learned exactly what I needed to learn in order to get the job I wanted. There's something to be said about the 'extra' classes you take at any normal college but in the end employers see your portfolio and not much more.
Honestly sorry that things aren't working out for you, Ben, that school sounds like a crock.

Hey Ben, what college are you going to? Sounds like one we got down here called Full Sail.
I'm getting a computer animation degree at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale and I feel like I'm learning alot. |

Ben,
SCAD is a private university, isn't it? Tutition rates should be the same, in or out of state. I applied a couple of years ago, filled out all the financial aid forms, and the bill was something like $23,000 a year. Too much, just to learn animation, IMO.
The more I talk to people, the more I hear "Get an art or movie degree from any four year public school, and learn animation on your own."
What's scad gonna teach you, except how to use XSI or Maya. Buy a copy of Animation Master for $200 and save your cash. Where are you going to school now?

$$$ is what kept me from going to ACCD, but with the mixed feelings of Art Center I've seen on this forum and elsewhere, that may have been a blessing.
Then again, the School of Life hasn't proved to be much less expensive...
Best of luck, Ben whatever you do.
edit - sorry, off topic.
