I am considering applying to an art college soon.

However, all my latest stuff was done on computer and I hardly have any traditional work at the moment.

Can digital art be submitted in portfolio applications to most art colleges or is that just silly?

yes it counts but u also definitely should have some traditional work as well... just look around u and draw stuff.. i took a bunch of my sisters toys and piled them together and drew that for example... another good (but tricky) thing to draw for a portfolio is a bicycle.. hope this helps and good luck

edit : what schools are u considering applying to btw... and for what possible major?

Thanks guys, I think I'll start working on a new portfolio soon.

shardik: Well, it depends on what I can afford to attend really. Prices are pretty steep. The Royal Academy of Art in London seems to offer a good education and is quite well respected (or so I've heard). I am also thinking about Edinburgh College of Art, though I've been quite unhappy here and I think I'd like to study somewhere else. I haven't ruled out the possibility of going to an art school outside of the UK, somewhere like Art Centre if can reasonably afford it(and they happen to like me, of course).

However, I'm just looking out for places and would recommend any suggestions from people.

Yeah, heh. Bicycles and skeletons. The bread and butter of art school portfolios.
Or if you are really up for it, a skeleton on a bicycle.

Hi Ceenda
Someone told me that if you have access to a CD burner, you can burn on all your images and animations (if any) and submit it for them to browse.
Not sure if the school you're applying to will accept a CD ROM, but it's a good way of organising your images and you don't have to worry about printing.

Hey Ceenda

The one thing that I have found at some colleges (locally in South Africa), is that some lecturers are very hostile towards digital work and question its merit. They merely toss it aside as "worthless", until you have mastered the traditional media. (The whole digital vs traditional argument)

I personally wouldn't assume that the institutions that you apply to are totally comfortable with digital stuff. You don't want to be caught off gaurd.

So what I would recommend is to not totally rely on the digital side of your portfolio to get you accepted. It would be a very good idea to back the digital side of your portfolio with a strong traditional side.

Just my opinion, but I suppose it all depends on how progressive the colleges you apply to are.
