I've noticed a common style among concept artist," the rounded mechanical" type stuff. With big shapes and tiny bits of detail here and there.
My question is, where in the world does this stuff come from? Are there any books with images like this? Stuff like the Doug chiang tutorial on using markers.
I'm looking for any reference material or images I could learn from, so if anyone knows of any please post some links.

Not that I would have the answer, but I'm not quite sure I'm getting the question. What rounded shapes are you talking about?

Isn't just about everything about "big shapes" with smaller ones thrown in? At least that's how I think about most stuff.

I'm not sure how to describe the style other than a mix between technical and architectural drawing.

I'm from a fine art background, and this type of stuff was considered as "the wrong way to draw" things, it was too "comic book" looking. So now that I'm done with school, I want to learn as much as I can about this method of drawing. I see this style in many concept sketches for spaceships, interior designs for "futuristic" rooms, etc.
I'm just curious as to what do these people look at for inspiration. I see more of this style in Asian design, but I don't know what artists to look for. It's not just one persons style, I've seen it many times by different people.
I've seen people post images like this on the forums before, you know the ones, the ones with marker and pen.

I don't think there's any particular method involved. If you want to get rounded look you have to start with curved lines and ellipses. Squared look - straight lines. That's about it.

Have you got "the art of Star wars Episode 1 the Phantom menace"? if you want lots of that style it's a good book to get

More elipse art than you could possibly want

not sure if that was what you were after. do you want a "how to" book, or just some pictures to look at? don't know of any tutorial books on that stuff specificaly.

I'm just looking for more examples to look at. I see alot of this type of stuff in some comic books that uses alot of detail.
I'll see if i can find that book you're talking about and flip through it. But yes, that's the type of stuff I'm after.

I have a very simple answer to your question: all those concept artists went to the Art Center College in Pasadena. This is where they learned technique and style.

As far as books, I don't know: I guess if you find a book written by an ex-art center student you'll find the same kind of style...
