I'm new to all this computer drawing malarkey, so I don't mean to sound ignorant when I ask how is that translucent effect created when shading? I've looked long and hard at Dhabih's gallery as well as all the posts in the finished and progress boards but I can't figure it out. I've tried the Color Dodge/Burn technique in Dhabih's tutorial but I always seem to get a messy gradient and a dirty color. I've tried blurring as well, but the picture loses definition and the shadows become light. Does anyone know any trade secrets or stuff that may help a newbie in distress? |

Make sure that the Dodge/burn tool is set to 'midtones', If that isn't working for you try the other two settings (highlights, and shadows) Also try lightening up on the extent of exposure you are using. (All this found in 'options') If that doesn't work, then gee, I don't know cuz it works for me..Maybe you can try just using a darker version of the color you are shading, use the air brush, and as Dhab says in his tutorial "shade it maunually." Note there are other settings on the airbush and pencil tools such as 'Overlay" and "Color burn" Hope this helps. |

Brush Opacity!
I think thats your problem here. As well as the options already mentioned by 'Goddess Dezi'.
Change it and lower it to make the 'exposure' of each tool less. It's the same as an airbrush with a lower opacity/transluceny. Less amount of paint gets on the canvas if you let less on!
