You know what you're trying to achieve: Weight Shift, Controposto Stance. How the heck do you get it to look realistic?
I've been working on it a while and I sort of got it to look natural, but not as natural as say, ancient Greek Classical sculpture. |

well I'm sorry to say you suck, clearly you are no good as ancient masters at art :-) In the Bridgeman book which I just bought which is great, he would draw the three masses of the waist the chest and the head as cubes I think. I've tried it a little bit, and I think it helps to try to get the basic angle of where each part is facing. I dunno, its kind of tough to explain without pictures. |

I've been working on it during lunch at school... I'll have my friends rest their weight on one leg and I'd sketch them from different angles. They think I'm weird, but that's ok... their pretty odd too. If I had a scanner, I'd put up the sketches, but they aren't tremendously detailed.
But it's coming along.... i guess it's just one of those things one must practice incessantly. Btw, where've you been Edible Snowman? I haven't seen you on ICQ in like two weeks or something! |

Here's a tip;
When the weight rests on one leg, the hips will tilt upwards, towards the leg that the weight is rested on. The shoulders will also tilt downwards, toward the leg that the weight is rested on. The lower back will "sway" slightly, again in the direction of the leg that the weight rests upon. The head and neck however, tend to tilt slightly _away_ from the afore mentioned leg. Hope this helps...

Yeah unfortunately for some people the solution for everything is lots of practice, like me for example. I don't suppose anyone has a cure for laziness? Hydrid, we must be getting on at different times, because I have been on icq. |

Visigoth is talking about the trademark of weight shifted to one leg. It's called, "Contrapasto." Where the hips go one way, and the shoulders go the other. Here... I did a quick sketch to "illustrate" the point. (no pun intended)
I did a very subtle weight shift (no exaggeration of one knee bending, etc) Hope that helps.

lol, feebsaint, what's that toothy fellow doing in the corner?
Yeah, contraposto is getting easier for me to sketch. Eventually I'll get it right enough to do a drawing on the comp. Thanks! |
