Hello Everyone

It would be interesting to see a rating system in this forum - not one integrated into the source code itself, just put in posts. (e.g I'll give this a 7 out of ten)

The yardstick for this rating system will, eventually, become "stable" as it gets commonly used ... To kick it all off, 1 will be given to a non-artistic "I learnt how to use filters" photomanipulation, and 10 is for a spooge masterpiece. People who do not want their artwork to be "judged" can state so ... enough of that, I know. I'm stating the obvious .

Of course, like all other things, the measure of art is better put as a hypersphere (color, composition, yabba yabba) than put linearly - but let's just keep it simple. It's not mandatory to vote (duh), but it would be nice to see something like that in a forum as well established as this one.

Just a thought.

[edit] Grammar. Bah

I'm really not too fond of rating systems.

I hate to put my feelings about a picture down into numbers, and I really hate having my pictures rated. I'd rather hear someone's honest opinion /without/ seeing a number attached to it.

Besides, a comment about "you would really need to correct this and this, bla bla bla" can be pretty okay to get, but a "I rate this '2'" might completely put you down and make you give up working on a picture. Maybe I'm too easily influenced by other people's opinions, but I really like how it is now. Constructive criticism, not a rating - I have had enough of having my talents rated back in school...

...I'm grown up now, I don't need it

i think a rating system would be a bad idea.. its bad enough that people put "I like it" or "I hate it" without saying what they like or dislike or how to improve it...
if u want to rate stuff go to www.amihotornot.com hehe be mean!

I don't think it's a good idea. Some people just draw/paint for expressing themselves and not for artistic merit, and I think it would be quite dissapointing to get graded negatively on a piece you put a lot of work into... I just think it's unnecessary. Everyone must be judged and helped relative to their level, improvement upon their last images and talent.

[ed] - damn typos. =)

Pehaps the inverse could be true ? If you wanted your picture to be rated, then say so ... ?

On a scale of one to ten, I give this idea a 2!

I agree with Enayla. This board is all about learning to improve your pictures, not about getting grades for them. What does it really matter how good other people think your picture is? You can easily tell that by peoples' comments, anyway. But getting a number can only do one of two things - inflate your ego, or smash your self esteem, neither of which is a good thing.

I only made the comment above about this idea getting a "2" to prove a point. It's no fun getting low grades, and if someone doesn't like your stuff, it's infinitely more useful (and less painful) for them to explain why than to just throw a number at you.

I see a unanimous verdict - I thought it would be nice to see yourself improve with practice - in a numerical format, perhaps.

Obviously, I was wrong. Besides, I could rate my own idea a "2" simply by reading the comments here - what good would a number do anyway ? (though the inverse is also true)

I was just worried that people might interpret comments wrongly - a comment like "that's an unusual picture" can mean many things ... but going to the other extreme of making it too direct isn't the best solution either.

Perhaps in this context, a "this idea isn't feasible" would be a nicer way of saying "this idea sucks - f**k you" and, a "2" would stand neutral ... just some food for thought.

Just let this thread slip down ... into the elsuive realm of the second page - to be forgotten, and lost.

Hmmmm ...

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound so harsh. The main point I was trying to make was "Gee, wouldn't getting a 2 suck?" - but I guess I made it too well. Sorry. [Hugs all around!]

This is exactly what I am talking about - A subtle change in tone of my message can result in misinterpretation. I didn't find your comment harsh at all - just insightful.

After all, this is only an idea - there are no winners and losers, just a verdict.

Well, instead of a rating system, how about "karma points?" If someone posts a picture, or a post, and if a reader likes it, the poster gets awarded one karma point...

And maybe somewhere on the forum, there can be a list of which thread has the most karma points? Now why is this useful? Ah, lets just call it fun.

But Of course, master works will always recieve the highest karma points AND respsonses. That's just how it is. maybe, a thread that gets the least amount of posts, but a good amount of karma points will balance things out.

Just brainstorming

JJ

I give this idea a 1.

We don't need this... it's perfectly good as it is.. if you want to rate pictures, go to digitalart.org

The rating system on Slashdot sucks:

Linux rules! Windows is ass! Richard M. Stallman is the greatest person who has ever lived! All hail the GNU!!!!
(Score: 5, informative)

Come on guys. I think we could be a little more objective. Linux is an operating system with it's advantages and disadvantages, just like any other.
(Score: 1, redundant)

I think karma would be nice. But the forum split seems to have helped for now.

I guess a rating system would hurt some people's feelings but I for one wish we had the "views" statistic along side the replies. Ya know the number that lets you see how many times your work was viewed. It would make you aware of how many people actually took the time to advice and how many just wanna look around.
I'm the look around type mostly. My level of digital art doesn't allow me much in the way of critiquing.
Anyone thoughts on this one?
