I've seen a lot of references to the smudge tool being negative, is it true that smudging is seen as cheap?!

I often use smudging with my pictures, after having first laid out slabs of colour. I use it to make the picture completely smooth. I would use the paintbrush completely if I had enough patience and RAM. So what do you guys think?

If it achieves the affect you wanted, why not?

I think its fine. I use it as well. Just try to avoid making your pictures to smudgy looking and blurred. Remember to texture..

It seems that the negativity towards smudging occurs when it's obvious someone used smuding. Like when you have smudge streaks all over the place in an attempt to be somewhat abstract. I guess what it boils down to is the use and abuse of smudge. Almost every digital artist will probably use some smudging in a tasteful way to provide a smooth gradient for shading, or to clean up some parts of the picture. To just smudge randomly for the sake of smudging is looked at about as scornfully as using filters it seems.

If you want to blend colors together you might want to hop over to Painter and use the Liquid tool - try the Just Add Water, or Grainy Water option. They work in real-time unlike Photoshop's tools, and they provide a much more natural-looking result. I would NEVER use Phtoshop's blend tools after having used Painters. Tweak the Opacity setting of the brush for the right amount of blend strength.

Give it a try!
