Never heard of it before, but it sounds pretty good. Too bad it's out of print, I would have liked to get it.
Wait- I just found an online bookstore that still has it. At least in their catalogue. Guess I'm going to try ordering it there.

We have that book in the office where I work.
I've read it a couple of times, and thought it was very helpful as a reference. I'd say it was a worth while purchase

I'm gonna go the other route, but not vehemently...

I found the book to be rather stiff in nature... the models the guy came up with did not seem very life like at all. It's actually been a book in the back of my mind, because I've found other methods that are more natural, and feel I could write a similar book that was much more natural.

Incorporating lessons from Hogarth and like artists, who draw so much from their heads, that their work takes on a quality of fakeness, but have such sound advice, can definitely have its fringe benefits. However, there are a truckload of artists who have been drawing from life/mind that set an entirely new standard. I think what seperates the two, is a factor of, who's really having fun with it?

If you focus in more on character/movement/story... then you begin to add life to your drawings, like it or no... You can then really get into "figure drawing from your mind." A basic knowledge of the figure is all too important here, though; and taking life drawing classes should almost always precede an attempt to make it better from your mind.

Want an example or two? Check out the very life-like drawings of Alan Tew. His stuff does not try to be the most realistic it can be, but it is very realistic, in that the figures feel very real!

Here are 2 I did... One from life, and the other from mind. I know you can tell which is which, but it's the fluidity I'm trying to point at:

I'm gonna be lazy, and not review this post, but it was probably nonsensicle babble, eh? Ah, well... I'm tired, and I really don't have a ton of conviction on this, but it's something I felt like I should comment on, or at least explore more, as it has been in the back of my mind for a while...

Well, I just ordered it. I'm not sure whether it will be delivered since as I said it's currently out of stock and I don't know anything about any reprint dates.

feebsaint - What exactly makes you dislike the book ? Do you think that Tiner's results lack in some way ? Or do you think that other methods of learning to draw out of your mind are just more efficient ?

Well anyways I'm going to take a look at it. It's pretty much what I want to improve on right now, so I guess it's worth a try.

I just didn't like how unnatural all of the figures looked. Then again, I really could be thinking of another "figure drawing without a model," although I doubt it.
