OK heres the cituation. In max 3 originally when I whould run the cursor over the transformation gizmo the X,Y,Z axis would light up as the cursor touched them so that I could move along that axis if I wanted. now that doesnt seem to be happening what do I do to get that option back. does this make sense? any help would be great

You might've accidentally hit 'x' to turn it off. Just press it again like Frost said. If that's no longer the hotkey for it then just go to Preferences/Viewport and then look in the bottom left hand corner and you'll fidn a check box to turn Transform Gizmo on and adjust the length of the axis.
