Have you ever found it difficult to critize your own work ? I struggle with that very often ... it's seems almost as though it were buried in my conetive mechneisms ... What are the techniques you can use to look "through" an image, to spot it's odvious flaws, before someone else points it out ?

I'll start the list ...

1) Mirror the picture/Flip the picture. Close your eyes, and look at the picture again.

2) Do a completely different activity (dinner, television, walks, yabba yabba) and look at the picture again.

3) Look at better artwork, then look at your own picture. Somehow, this "refreshes" the mind - and is usually the most effective way of spotting odvious flaws.

Carry on ...

I find, I have the complete opposite problem.. I am WAY to self critical, to the point, it actually hinders by abilities. It's been almost a month since I finished a picture, because I'm never happy with what I have.. I always seem to spot my mistakes right away, and no matter how often I correct them, it still looks wrong. End result... pictures arent often finished. Something I severely need to work on. How on earth do you get past that?

Aqua, i hear ya! I'm the same.. I get frustrated when things dont come out "perfectly" right away...A bad habit I formed as a kid, I'm getting better now thou. Figure drawing helps alot, forcing me to draw more in less time.

Tell your wife: "What does this picture look like?".
If your 6-hours-work "Dark Elf hiding in the forest" is defined by her as "hey! Cute monkey!", your self-criticism doesn't work very well.

After I am done, I scan my pictures for problem spots and area that seem odd, so that in the future I don't do it again. I try to know what I can and can't do so far.
