This place is great. Very cool artists, and some extrodingary art!
Okay, here goes; I use PhotoShop to do what everyone else around here does (just not as well) to create digital art. For about a month and a half, PS hasnt been working so great. It freezes up after about five to ten minutes of use. I mean nothing works, 'ctrl' 'alt' 'delete' does nothing, just frozen. I have version 5.5 of PS and a home brew comp, had the almost the latest and greatest nine or ten months ago . The OS is Windows 98 SE. Dont know if that helps but... Heres what I've done so far. (PS was working fine for months):
None of this stuff was happening until I put Windows ME on. Then after a few weeks of ME, this started happening .
Scrubbed my hard drive. Started over from windows '95. Went up to '98 SE.
Changed the RAM, 128 megabytes. So defiantly enough for it to run.
Changed the video card. It was a ATI, changed to a older Diamond, dint work.
Messed around with a bunch of settings, Video, memory, didn't work.
My comp never freezes up during normal use, Internet, typing, that kind of stuff. But if I go to use a program that requires a lot of RAM, (winamp, PHOTOSHOP, Star craft) it freezes up, nothing works, NOTHING!!
I cant think of anything else to do. I suspect my pen tablet, turned the drivers off, didn't help . I'm really frustrated. My tablet is a old WACOM Pen Parter:O, with the newest drivers. (Yes, I plan on getting a new one). I'm stuck. I need PhotoShop like a addict needs heroin.
So please, if you know what I can try or what will help, please reply. Thanks in advance.

If you can live without 98's extra features, I would revert back to 95. I found that my whole system crashed less and was running faster on Windows 95 than on 98.
Some things you probably tried:
-Defragging
-Re-Installing Photoshop and any associated stuff
-Getting possible Photoshop Updates (Not to 6.0 just minor ones)
-Format entire harddrive if possible (backups)
If all that doesn't help
-make sure RAM sticks and connectors on motherboard are clean, if not clean using a can of compressed air
And if that doesn't help
-Swap RAM sticks (maybe some bytes are defective) & possibly motherboard (get from a friend & try out)
oh yeah the last part is just a random guess, but I guess you could try it out anyways.
Hope you get it done

Are you overclocking your computer?
If so try to clock it down to the original or lower. |

Hmm, I never thought of that, if worst comes to worst I'll try it. I can totally live without the features.
Did the rest of the you suggested, but the only Updates I saw were for different languages. Alas, none of the other stuff worked. Thanks for the great suggestions.

I never thought of that, I try it! Thanks!!
Anybody else have any ideas? Heres an incentive, if you have the winning solution, I will draw you a pic! While it might not be so great, its the thought that counts (just like Christmas) .
Thanks again everyone!!

something simillar has been happening to me since a few weeks. each time I'd play a game the pc would freeze. After hitting the rebooting switch, the screen would stay black and it would keep on beeping and I wouldn't be able to turn it off unless unplugging the damn thing (EEEEEK! Do NOT do that!)...
Nothing ever happened in Photoshop tho.
I clean reinstalled win98se and it still happened. I then used a pencil eraser on my RAM connectors and snapped them back in place making sure they were properly set. I also made sure the CPU was properly connected as well.
My friend's pc was still working but doing really odd things and generaly going nuts just because it had a slightly displaced CPU..

I can't find a tech support number. I looked on adobe for patches and the only ones I saw were ones that enabled a person to have PS in different languages. My dads convinced its a hardware problem (video card to be exact) and I don't know what the fuck to do. I'm might be S.O.L. Sigh.....

I hate computers.
whoever invented them should be crowned a king first (for the good basic idea) and then thrown into a pit with hungry lions (because it never works)-
or maybe just a certain mister Billy G. is responsible for all our trouble. |

I had this same problem a little while back...both on my computer at home as well as my kick ass computer at work - which had more than enough RAM. One thing that seemed to fix all the problems was adjusting the cap on the RAM that Photoshop used. In your preferences menu(in photoshop), turn the amount of RAM from 50% to something like 25% and see if you still have such erroneous problems .

Try pressing ALT. I'm pretty sure that should fix it. |
