Man, u looklike u have a good eye.....Butif you really want to improve ur drwing and values---start on paper(traditional media) Once you've got the basic skills then digital is just another medium. Looks good though!

I like this too. My only suggestion would be to make the signature a little more discreet. It draws attention away from the portrait, imo.

Hello again, here is my current project. It's far from done, but I thought everyone here might like to see it. It's taken from a new Dreamcast game, "Shenmue". This is Nozomi and I used a picture of her from the manual as a referance. This is my first attempt at doing a portrait as well as my fifth only project in digital art.

There is also a picture I drew of a cute little puppy in my earlier post - please check it out.

Very nice! The only thing I can suggest is that you make the right portion of the face a little more rounded as right now it is kinda flat in the cheekbone area.

Hi Alloy!
It looks pretty good
I have some crits:
It looks unfinished when it fades out that way. Did you plan making only the face or did you just start with the face? If that is the case i would suggest sketching up everything instead of one part at the time, cause it's easier to see how the whole thing is going to look if you work on the whole piece at the same time. It will also save you a lot of trouble.

She also lacks harder and sharper shadows like on the nose.
Hope this can help..
Mikael

Thanks for your comments so far. I definately plan on doing a lot of work with the shading. I really have no idea what I'm doing, but after about 500 mistakes, I finally hit on something right. This is actually a cropped version of what I have so far. I have a *very* early sketch of hair, and underneath, she has a full head, but is bald - has no ear and looks creepy(the ear is covered by hair).

It seems I will end up studying Enayla's hair tutorial a lot tonight - but she has straight hair! I might even try putting my wacom graphire to use, but I'm so used to a mouse at this point that a pen feels unnatural .

Pencil? Paper? Traditional medium? Truth is, I never was very good at drawing. Sure, I could make interesting doodles, but my real talent lay in sculpting. Pushing, pulling, smearing, adding and taking away. Oddly enough, this is exactly how I paint. For my last two projects, I started with a big blob of white, I then proceeded to shape it by taking away areas I didn't want, and adding areas I did until I felt it looked right. Once the shape was down, I started adding some shading, and then proceded to "sculpt" my picture out of that.

Obviously at some point I add detail, as with this portrait, but it is still just pushing stuff around - only on a much smaller scale.

At any rate, I did come to this board for a reason, and that was to take what little talent(and lots of luck) I've had and improve on it. I have taken all suggestions to mind and think they are good. This weekend I'm gonna buy some paper and something to draw with and get intimate with the basics - Thanks Mr Wonton.

Well, here is a small update based on some of the suggestions you guys have made. I tried to make her face a little rounder and added some color(more to see how it might look when finally done). The hair is crap, but heck, it's my first attempt and with a mouse. I also redid my signature, so I hope this one is a little less distracting.

Thanks for the input

Great pic!

but after you altered it the jaw-bone (right hand side on the screen.) seems to be a little bumpy , the shadow that is.. and not as sleek as the rest of the pic. maybe when you tried to make it rounder ?

or is it just me....

love the eyes!

Her eyes and lips are beyond gorgeous! *stares*

The colour of the eyes are really nifty The face is sweet looking as well, and you did a nice job with the hair

Maybe, just shmaybe, the skin colour is a bit greenish, but I don't know - perhaps you intended it to be?

Enayla... you need to get working on that straight hair tutorial

And Alloy, thats definitely not bad with mouse! As has been said, the eyes and lips are really well done. I think the shading could be a little smoother around the jaw, but overall, you're really getting there!

Thanks again guys

Enayla: Thanks for so many compliments, I was expecting much more criticism from someone of your caliber.

Resitanz: I don't have a hair tutorial, but Enayla has a really good one. It's one of the posts here, and she may have an html version elsewhere, but if so I don't know where. Just search back some pages, or do a search for Enayla and "hair" or something.
