the smudge/blur stuff ruins it. you shoulda kept the colors 100% flat.
try that and it might turn out much better.

Yah, waht faust said. For anime use cell shading. Basically three tones for each color. one highlight, normal, and shadow. Try not to blur or anything cuz it ruins it. You may also try inking it digitally and making the lines finer with the pen tool. But anyway, great picture. |

again the same problem, the only part of it that works and looks good is the face and the hair. the rest is just "..............uh?"

yeah it's good you didn't lead with that one. It has absolutely no compositional elemants whatsoever. I'd like to see this picture in 'cell' format, that would look nice. |

yeah if you don't know how to use it.
look at my organicshit work and tell burn/dodge go to hell then.
it's a most excellent tool, people just don't know how to use it right.

People don't know how to use dodge/burn in moderation to be more specific, imo. Lately though I've found it good practice to replicate the effect you get from the tool through nothing but the paintbrush tool. I'm hoping this kind of practice might help if/when I get into some traditional painting.
vengeancearts - I have to agree with the others about the whole dodge/burn and then smudge method you've got going here. It's too blurry. I'd try doing what Isric suggested and go for more of a cell painting technique (oh, it's been awhile since I've done some of those...all in my pre-digital art days, fun stuff ) Paint the rest of the image much like you've done the face of your character and see how that comes out.

It's obvious you spent a lot of time on the coloring. It's the only way you can learn your own technique is to try different things.
I agree with the others though. Much too blurry and 'overworked' on the color dodge/burn/smudge thing.
Of course what the hell do I know I haven't gotten my own techniue down yet. keep trying! You seem to have a decent linework going.

I agree with the Faust and the others.
It's too muddy and blurred. Anime is usually very sharp, got flat colours and has well defined shapes and lines.
The main problem i can see is how even the lines are blurred wich make everything melt together. It's also too shiny. Try to squint with your eyes while looking at it and you'll know what i mean.
Try to keep it clean and sharp.
Hope this can help.

This guy doesn't look as dynamic as your pic drawing wise but it's the 3 or 4 shading tones idea.
