I went to see a movie the other day. (Yeah? So what?) Well, I only go to the movies once or twice a year, if that, so it's something of an event for me. Last year, I saw The Sixth Sense and American Psycho....
And my first movie for this year was...Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. What a film.... Gorgeous camera work. Made me want to run off somewhere and steal all the ideas. (Not, of course, that I would).
So I'm in a good mood because I saw a movie. Yee-ha. I need to see more movies. (I've hardly seen any). Which ones are good?

Snatch is a fantastic film. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the DVD, which is winging it's way to my post box even as we speak.
But that said, Socar, if CT,HD was the last film you saw, it, pretty much goes downhill from there on in. |

Well, I recently saw a Japanese film called Kamikaze Taxi. It's not quite what the name might imply. One of the few movies that actually deserve the 5-star reviews quoted on the video cover.

O Brother Where Art Thou is a hilarious movie. Especially if you've read the Odyssey. Anything else by the Coen bros. rule as well. |

Do yourself and huge favor and see The Iron Giant, one of the best animated films and films in general. A wonderful story and a great character. Based on a book and play. Really, really well done and fun for adults adn children alike.

snatch was a giant comerical (a movie preview made into a movie), im still waiting for the actual movie part to be released. i guess if i had to watch it again, i would watch lock stock and two smoking barrels instead.
having read homer's the odyssey, and seeing the movie oh brother where art thou...i dont really understand the relation people make between the two. for fuck's sake, old disney cartoons make a better comparision. what says even more, is the fact that neither coen has even read the odyssey. parts of the movie were funny, but it dragged on and on...and on. just because the queer's guide to artsy films says the name coen is greater than god, doesnt make every movie stamped "coen brothers" a masterpiece. |

I'm a big fan of Lock Stock, but Snatch was a better film by far. The story had a much smoother pace to it, the humour was more pronounced, it had lots of little artistic touches to it, it wasn't afraid of it's own style, and the cast and crew were far more confident in what they were doing, resulting in a much more solid film. Can't wait for Ritchie's next one. |

FaithInChaos, opinions are like...
Just watch Raising Arizona or The Big Lebowski. Then, and only then pass judgement on the Coen brothers in general.
And duh! It wasn't a remake or a raping (like Disney's Hercules or Poke-a-hot-ass) but more a subtle reference, you can watch the movie and not get the references and still enjoy the movie.
I, having seen all (shy one) the Coens' movies, can actually say they are good movies. Why be so aggressive, I just happen to disagree with you. |

i dont know, i kind of thought i was watching a music video that was trying to sell me something. sure snatch had style and artistic touches, but too much can be a bad thing right? it is my opinion that: that while the story may have had a smooth pace to it, the film did not. the camera panning, title screen shots (with the actors name and pic), and those exit scene warpings (or whatever they were) gave the film a cut and paste attribute. i watch too many movies, and maybe have an overly critical view on them. its just, that after watching the first half of the movie, i half expected to see a tampon comerical pop up between scenes.
i have watched and enjoyed both raising arizona and the big lebowski, but i dont see how it relates to o brother where art thou...
i wasnt implying all their movies are horrible, just that not all their movies are great by defualt because their name is coen.

And I was talking on behalf of personal experience, not referring to my "queer's guide to artsy films". Distinct difference.
And yes, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a far superior film than Snatch. |

SlightlyTwisted, who was that aimed at?
Ragnarok, it's Akira Kurosawa, and I suggest watching Yojimbo and The Seven Samurai; his most famous/popular works. Very entertaining. And if you're into Japanese films, after checking out Kurosawa, get your hands on any movie by Takeshi "Beat" Kitano. Sonatine is pure genius from start to finish. Humor doesn't get much darker. Be sure you get something he's directed, not just acted in. I did the mistake of watching a movie in which he is in only as an actor. Don't get me wrong, his performance was brilliant, it's just that the rest of the movie sucked majorly. I think it was called Gonin. Avoid.
And if can get your hands on Samurai Fiction, do so. Also very funny movie. A samurai movie with a rock'n'roll soundtrack. Very groovy. |

I've seen that film and I liked it.
Have you seen Ikiru? It's not a famous film, but it's very deep. |

Count Zero: Anyone who cares to read it, although I thought it was quite obviously a reply to what FilthInChaos said, myself.
As for Kurosawa films, Rhapsody in August, Seven Samurai (which I just ordered), and Yojimbo (aka The Bodyguard) are the only ones available on DVD over here in region 2 land. |

i love animation, the emotion captured in a good animated flick, beats out that of a normal movie (imo..)
as i said before, i liked tarzan, and the iron giant, but i also enjoyed ghost in the shell, akira, elf princess rane and princess mononoke
animation not to see
dinosaur, emporors new groove, and titan ae (bleh!)

Don't assume that just because you've seen a lot of films, the rest of us haven't. I watch many many movies. Far too many. But I don't take that as a lisence to preach my opinion as the only valid one on filmography. So, you've seen a lot of films, eh? Big whoop de fucking doo. There's always someone stood behind you who has seen more.
I'm extremely critical of films. I can't stand most of the bastards. A film has to be seriously doing something right for me to really like it.
Taste in films is like taste in anything. It's totally relative. I can't stand rap music. I can't stand whining, whinging country & western. Does that make it bad music? Hell, no. Lots of people like them, live for them, listen to nothing but them. That I myself do not like them has absolutely nothing at all to do with how good they are. To think otherwise would be pig ignorant. I've seen billions of films, and yet my opinion on whether or not Snatch is a good film is totally irrelivant. As is yours. People will enjoy whatever the hell they want to, whether you like it or not. Accept, move on.

Socar Myles, you should watch Blade Runner, it's a great movie.
And for all of you who want to watch a really good film:
Ikiru, by Akira Kuroshawa (sp?) |
