I've been wanting to learn 3dstudiomax for a while. So I bought a book. On 3d Studio Max R3. All good and dandy, REALLY good book, but it's a peachpit press one, and they are always good, right? I hit chapter 6, animation, and i'm running 3d Studio Max version 2.5. The book is going off on "Keys", and I can't find them. I can find where they should be, but nothing happens when I press the key. Which draws me to one of two conclusions: 3d Studio Max R2.5 is lacking something R3 has, or I'm being stupid, and I don't know where the keys are. I'll move on to chapter 7, it seems that chapter 6 is one you can safely skip, until i can figure this out. Thanks.

Yeah, R4 looks incredible.

R3 is a world of difference, but, umm... keys are in 2.5 too. Make a box, click the animate button on, scrub the time slider to about "30", then move the box. Presto, keys.

'keys' can be found in the 'track view'. Ver. 2.5 has keys like version 3.x.

Ex. Animate a box fra point A to point B. make sure it works by moving the timeslider from start to finish and see the thing actually move... Then open the track view and under your object's name you'll find a track called 'transform'. Open that and you'll see your animation keys. Voila. Since everything (almost) can be animated in max, keys are very important... I hope this helped you out a bit...

Yeah, saw some demos of R4 and they've got some great stuff going on in there. I particularly like the customizable menus like in the Sub-Object area...now I can move the material ID and smoothing group section up near the Sub-Object mode section so I don't have to keep scrolling up and down to change face IDs while texturing, etc, etc. Or you can just expand the entire menu area to show the whole thing without having to scroll. Can't wait to see more of what it can do.

I think the new quad menus look awesome. I'm going to try to stop using the sidebar menus completely.
What impressed me most was the new character studio. Finally it handles joint creasing instead of just being retarded.

The reviews I read for Magma seems like it's going to be a big update.
