Alright, the nice comments in the last thread made me spent some of the christmas time on more anatomy practise.
I started out in photoshop painting until I had as good a face I could paint without reference, and then took a look at some icewind dale portraits to make adjustments.
(The small pics)
Today I changed into Painter after realizing how much faster it is to paint in it, and made the rest of the pics, no ref used.
I think I'm in a point where some outsider comments could really do some good, so please take a look, notice a lot of common mistakes and then point them out and make me feel stupid, thank you :]
All the faces on a single file (~200kb):

Meanwhile, I'll see if I can crank out a few more of those and maybe learn something.
Thanks again, joachim, frost and janne.

i think affected's way of drawing faces (or human body anatomy in general) would suit your hands pretty well. go mull over his work.
just a half suggestion.

i hope you dont mind but i did a couple of sketch overs to illustrate my points.
i think your sense of anatomy is pretty darn good, but the only problem that i saw in your pics was that they were lacking a bit in perspective. like in this pic there was too much of the face, it would wrap around more. (squinting helps the yellow lines jump out more )
and in this one, the side of the face would receed more.
i hope this isnt discouraging, because these are some really nice peices, and i just want help. if you havent already, i would suggest doing fred's head tutorial. it is very good at addressing this very problem. also, try and draw some very basic heads, no features. just focus on getting the angles right.
hope i didnt step on any toes

looks good gecko, I agree with the others about working on the perspective, read the fred tutorial and andrew loomis. Also, maybe it could be nice for you to try painting things up more with lines, maybe it's easier to get the feeling of the perspective, forshortening and how to vary the form of different shapes ?!?

The skin in a couple of those reminds me of the way id did the skins in q3. Kinda that plasticy look to it. The stuff is lookin good.. I should be doin the same thing, just sit back a few afternoons over break and knock out a bunch of heads (ermm.. no pun intended). Anyway, keep up this pace and improvement is bound to come. It'll be interesting to see what you're doing a week from now :P
Oh, btw, where's affected been? I haven't seen him round the forums in ages... |
