When it rains these olives in my backyard get very dark and shiny. They really are beautiful trees. This is painted as it was drying out and then the sun came out.
I have always enjoyed Sargent's paintings of olives, and I saw them first through his images before I saw them for real.
I know it is tough for a lot of people to get out and paint from life, for a variety of reasons. You can always paint stuff around you. Don't feel limited and keep your eye fresh. Painting from life is so important.

Hi, spooge! I like this one a lot because I love trees. Olives are quite exotic to me 'cause I live in Finland. Hmm... very nice and it nice to see some live paintings too. Thanks.

Well Spooge, as your mentore I would like to say nothing. Because I am not your mentor.
Why did I just writ that?
What was the point?
No reason really, Just expresing my thoughts in an interesting creativ way.
Which is what I see in this painting. Were you very relaxed when you painted this? You went From wars and big facless guys to a nice scenary painting.
I like it alot. I think my favoret parts are the porch, tree trunk and those bushes over to the right. Mostly because of the colors.
Well Spooge..what can I say...oh ya
Its good to see more pics from ya.

Lovely, spooge. Your style seems to fit with anything! My only pseudo-crit would be that there is no scale, we can't know how big the tree is. Adding a person or a common object would solve this, but it's not necessary because it looks wonderful.

i love the colors in the background bushes.
also, the texture in the tree is terrific. how do you achieve that effect? it looks like a bunch of layers with some wacky custom brushes...?

Lovely, spooge !
I see you're getting in toutch with your "traditional" side. The blend of light and shadow add lovely variation to the ground. Sometimes I worry of how painting from life can be "cheating", especially when painting only for practice ... is it ?

Hi,
this wooden stuff in the foreground (windows?) should be a little darker to give more the feeling you are looking from inside out. i would say you have at least 3 layers
foreground, tree, and the rest behind the tree.
well...yes, maybe you can make the scene a little bit more dramatic. Something with the colors. Some warm and some cold colors...
well you know what your doing

Spooge I personaly feel real life is very boring. I also don't find real life to be very creative. I know that all things are based on what we really see everyday but I guess it is a matter of taste. I guess that is why Im work in the field I do..need more then reality to peak my interest.
Now as far as your painting I admire how you can have such loose shapes yet with lighting you can capture the essence and the mood of the setting..masterful!! |

spooge: Great stuff. One thing I like about your stuff lately is that I never know what to expect. I'd think that the way that light was coming in the left post would be a small silhouette in spots. Did you move your PC out to your porch to do this or did you look out a window? Thanks for posting by the way. |

Spooge: I assume you did this from looking outside your window again? Very nice ... I must confess I have not gotten to drawing from life yet... I'm slightly dissapointed in myself. This looks very nice, mostly because of the very free brushstrokes, non-caring for detail but more of the flavor of the scene, well done sensei.
ps. Do you own a lawnmower? hahaha |

Hmm, there are lots of olive trees in Israel. Maybe the olive has symbolic relationships as well.
This is nice. Maybe try simplifying it a bit more.. and its hard to remember but I think olive trees should look olden.
Olives taste good on salads too.. just a thought. |

very nice spooge ! This is on photoshop right ?
I agree, that painting from life is very important. Both backgrounds and people, I wish I grabbed my own ear and dragged myself out to do that more often.
Atleast, paint real (non digital) is one of my big plans for the next year, then it's easier as well to go out and paint.
btw, I think you've shown three images around your house. One with this tree, one with a garden, and even a sunset with a pirate ship, ..you must live in some sort of a dream house ...

This is very different from the stuff you usually post. Your simple shapes and values always blows me away...
The bunch of leaves in the top middle is amaizing. |

Ah, now this is more like it!
I just love landscapes.. Well this is a backyard, but the idea's basicly the same.
I hope you'll do more paintings of your surroundings, they're fun to watch and learn from.
Crit: The greens at the base of the tree seem a little light to me, maybe it's just ambient lighting, but I feel it should be darker to reflect the big olive tree's shadow more. But that's just me.
