That's not art, that's smut!
You think you can post pencil drawings of naked chicks kissing and call that art?
No, my friend, as an art nazi I can tell you that's not art!
That's porn!
By the way
I was joking
And by the way the only thing interesting in your first image is the photo. Sorry about that. Your pencil drawings are pretty nice though. Your first nude is really good. Carry on.

Thank you, galen, for posting those pics. I'll have to say that I don't have too much respect for photo-manip that doesn't have ANY kind of traditional background to back it up. I think this could be what bothers other people about this kind of art as well. Other people defending their background just rant about how revolutionary masters did stuff that wasn't considered art but what they don't mention is the fact that they usually had a more traditional background before they started spouting theories. The other people around doing background images haven't proven to me that their work is reputable...but they don't have to prove it to me or anybody, nor do I think they care to. I'm just saying that until I look up other works created by them or at least happen by a thread that shows some of it, then that'll remain my own opinion.
It's just that it's common for people to assume that the person behind a photo-maniped image has to resort to computer 'aid'. I think the computer 'aid' idea is bull but you do have to admit that people have shown off works done in a computer that they could never imagine doing by hand. Showing that you've done traditional work, no matter how poorly drawn (your work is nice, by the way), at least will show the basics that go into backgrounds like this such as color and composition.
As for me, I'm talking from a position where I can certainly create much better paintings on a computer than I could using a more traditional medium but at the same time I'm no slouch when it comes to hand drawn stuff and I'll also soon be taking courses involving more painterly mediums. I know that going through the learning process of these other mediums can only help when it comes to working on my digital works.
As for your piece here, I kinda like it. Morbid stuff is not my bag but I do like rust and dirt and the like because it makes things seem more real to me. The black moving up the right side of the page helps bring me back into the text and into the tan area to the left. Man, those girl's eyes are pretty freaky though.
Keep up the good work man.

Heh.. Galen the drawings are excellent. I made strong arguments AGAINST the "art nazis" in a previous thread.
Some people like to use photos in design work. However, from my understanding to be a copyrightable original work a casual observer should not be able to recognize the source image(s).
I think in this case the bw photo is really critical to the work. You should try to minimize individual photos imapacts or take your own. The idea is nice though esp if you would have simplified the bw photo.

Hey mister galen if you don't care about my posts don't answer to them.
And I can tell you whatever I want. This is a public forum for people to express their feelings and ideas. If you don't like people telling you that they don't like your stuff, don't post it there, just show it to your little group of goth friends who will stare in awe at your marvellous creation. If you post here you have to bear with the jerks like me.
Flinthawke: I have no problem with people using filters, effects, or whatever they want to create art. I have problems with people using copyrighted materials that they call their own, and I have problems with crappy images. It's not because you call your crap 'art' that your crap is art. Crap is crap ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

Being an artist that does modern art these days is posessing the skill to make people think that something is good, when it may not be.
I do like that pic, very good CD cover image, but, it does remind me ALOT of some of splitsouls earlier stuff, and im just wondering why Spitfire isn't Flaming it, when its such a similar style. Seems hypocritical to me. |

And what about creating some real art people, instead of scanning a copyrighted photo, slapping some filters and rust textures on it, throwing in some nonsensical teen angst and calling it your own?
get a life, get a style, work, learn, grow!
(hm not bad... sounds like teen angst) |

He never said he did anything with it. It's just a cover he wanted to show and share with us.
Man, calm down. I can't take it any longer. You weirdos think you have to flame anything and anyone that walks. |

So, is this your art, or a scan or someone else's art? Might want to make that clear in your post... Posting someone else's art without crediting them could be considered very not-cool...
That being said, I really dig this image. Right up my alley, very cool.

Faze : let me explain.
I do not dislike photomanip design in general. I only dislike it when people create a totally non-illustrative piece that shows no composition skill whatsoever and then call it "art".
Galens piece, though i strongly resent recycling of other peoples designs, at least shows an eye for composition - something totally absent in Splits work. Furthermore it actually "speaks", theres something behind it, which again wasnt the case with Splits stuff. And ofcourse its illustrative, not a weird blob of undefinable textures.
If i had known the photography wasnt his or stock, i had reacted differently, but most of the criteria by which i judged still stand regardless of that : composition, atmosphere, etc.
Besides that, Galen didnt use the 3-letter "A" word.
