One mistake I've been seeing alot if 3D is that when people make space scene's, they add spacecrafts, asteroids, etc. They also add fire to these asteroids and spacecrafts while their in space; thats the mistake. Their is no oxygen in space and one of the key elements to fire is oxygen.. Just thought i'd let you guys no so you can make your space scenes more realistic.

Aside from the fact that most space ships would very likely have some major supply of oxygen onboard which could easily be the source of the fire in question, why the hell are you posting this?

*Whew!* So thats what I was doing wrong... Now if I can only figure out why film directors add sound in their space movies. Hrmm...??

YOINKS!

[For Chapel below: It's actually "a lot" when you say "alot". Its kind of like wind(The air.) and wind(The toy.) how it's used in context. It's almost a lot(Phrase) like a lot(The area.). =] Dang-it, wheres my pencil!

Wow.. and to think he is from Orlando and NASA is right down the road.

By the way, I use the word "alot" alot. It is a slang word.. not a real word. If it were two words "a lot" it would mean just that... a lot... as in land.

d12, do you remember the movie 2001? Remember how quiet it was? Now, this is how space really is, but IMHO it was B O R I N G!

Explosions in space scenes or movies are not there because they should be or could be, they're there because people expect them to be there.

Yes, there is some truth to what you mentioned, as almost anybody with a high school education would agree with, but just because something is possible or not. . . it's our right as artists to interpret/represent/exaggerate or just plain pretend that somethings are more exciting than they would be in "real life".

Art is freedom to create. Try coloring the sky green and the grass blue. . .

How about we make a pact right now to never use any more linear shockwaves in space?

if a space ship used an oxygen-based burning fuel, it wouldn't be very efficient. so i'm sure they would use some sort of fission or fusion drive plasma-vacuum drives. something einstien-thompson based.

as for explosions in space having sound... it's called ARTISTIC LICENSE.

next time, watch star wars with the sound off. see if you like it.

So when a rocket leaves the earth, and I watch it go to the heavens, do I not see fire?
I ask you.

At this point, I might add that in the movie 2001, Kubrick used artistic license by NOT including sound. Noisy, fiery space scenes had become the norm, and Kubrick shocked people, in a subdued artistic way, by showing them the realism of the situation.

I for one don't mind your observation, d12. You're just trying to help other people, but some chose to take it as an insult. Critique is a tricky skill to master, so stick with it, and please continue to contribute to the forum. You may have to grow a thick skin though

I don't think they considered it an insult. It is just that bad grammar, bad spelling, and a "not so bright" statement usually get flamed here. I think Mozeman and myself find this a little silly since everyone in Orlando can probably see the rocket and shuttle launches from their homes. Yes, there is flame when they enter space. (not to mention I work for Lockheed Martin) Space means B.Y.O.O. bring your own oxygen

It would be awesome if a sequence went down like this:
Ship flying towards camera, blows up silently,
Cloud of gas and debris flies towards camera, gas first,
Sound of explosion as camera enters gas cloud,
fireball consumes gas, engulfs camera, and all goes black and silent again.

You know how in a movie sometimes you're in one particular scene? Then the movie seems to "cut" to an entirely different place, even hours into the future. Whoa! What happened? Have the laws of the universe gone topsy-turvy?

Seriously, I'm not offended by the statement; it's just a bit cliche. I wouldn't necessarily suggest that every 3D animator use space scenes without flames or sound. T'would be dull. If it helps you, think of it this way: The flames and sound are there to communicate certain things that don't play very well on screen. In a book you just explain everything. In a movie you have to show it.

I always liked the Babylon 5 battles without sound effects but accompanied by music...wonderfull I do think this subject is weird though. And it's kind of an oldfashioned subject aswell. Most of the people here aren't that dumb or anything. They already know this little fact. They just like to add some life to their art. It's fine with me. I know you mean well though. It just sounds to all the people here as if you've just watched Discovery and discovered something that you wanted to boost off with. it's k... But still...You might aswell remind everyone here that all people don't look alike...They know...Most of them. And then you get reactions like this....This post made me laugh also though.
