Ok, I got asked to draw a cupid for a party flyer. It is supposed to look elven/raver whatever. This is my sketch for far... What do you think? The flyer is intitled "stoopid cupid" I am doing about 7 more different sketches, but this is my first.

I like it very much. The hand holding the string is a little weird. When you pull the string on a bow its more with the middle of the fingers on the picture it looks like his pulling with his tips. Post it when its done its done i like it =). A question are you having trouble drawing wings also? when i tryed to draw an angel ones i couldnt get the wings going.

His pants aren't big enough. =) Heheh, and he needs some glowsticks and raver beads, etc...
Personally I think he is too skinny to be a cupid! His hands are a bit small in comparason to the rest of his body, and I think you'd do well to move his bellybutton up a smidge. How big are his wings going to be? Okay so I'm stuck with the cliche of the lil' fat cupid with teeny wings that would make flight impossible, but I can't help that! Then there is his neck. It connects to his head, well, it's too far back, if that makes any sense. Makes his chin look somewhat loooooong. What you could do is change the angle his neck is coming out of his shoulders-- have it leaning slightly forward.
I also think you should try a little harder to make him look "stoopid", but that's just me. His hair is awesome. =) I hope that helped any, otherwise I'll have to shut up, and that wouldn't be fun... |

Oooo... Nice, very nice, but you know what would make him complete? Some raver beads around his neck. Big fat raver beads. If you get a chance, check out Takeshi's comic "Sidekicks" available at you're local comic store. He draws all sorts or raver kiddies in it.
Only thing is he's kind of skinny, but that's a personal thing. Anyway, looks rad. Tre cool.

That picture's really cool.. I really like... well, almost all of it. :-) I have to agree that he's holding his arrow at a funny angle.. (Compare the lengths of string above and below the arrow.) Otherwise, though, he looks awesome.. Super skinny, but it looks cool that way. ;-) |

Ok.. Raver beads.... never seen'em. WHere would I put the glowsticks? I'll work on the arrows and the bow.
WIngs are kind of a problem... but i have to pictures of birds to referance from. I can draw dragon wings really well, just not angel ones.
Lukias: what do you mean I need my own form? Like style?
I know he seems overly skinny, but I like him that way... to me it gives him the "raver" feel... with out writting XTC all over him.

Your style is cool. But what are you influenced by??? It looks quasi anime to me. The hair style i like the best. Unfortuently, if its a rave, I think his expression should be a bit more pumped up.
He looks real pissed like someone just run over his cat and he's goona shoot em wit an arrow |

EVERYONE thinks its anime... actually its a little more "JTHM" influenced (Thats johnny the homicidle maniac). Thats why they are so skinny and have big heads. I do watch anime, but thats really not my influnce. I've read every Nny bookon the market to date.. including "a book about a girl" and "Squee"
so thats my influnce.. and this IS my style... (some people seem to think I need to develop my *own* style)

Your pic looks good, I'd like to see more action in the pose...it looks like "here is a model of what Jim is supposed to look like" You need to make him feel alive by giving him personality and gesture. As for raver beads and style... f-ing dumb!!! As long as you keep up with your influences, and draw what you like, you cannot help but have a style...and why would you put raver beads if you dont know what they are... some people are really trendy and cliche and cheap...so they add shit they see in every other comic to theirs...I say be original, be yourself... as long as you keep drawing you'll do fine. He looks good to me...anatomy is the other problem...but that is just anal studying. So all looks good as of now Never cheat yourself by copying popularity, you have an style and a vision inside, just keep nuturing it Take Care.

Ouch, dude. Calling me cheap? Well, it was only a suggestion.. Man some people are pretty hostile here. Ah well, must be some of that Holiday love around here.
Anyway, it was only a suggestion. Mainly because the topic was a raver, there are certain things that label people a raver. For example, if I were to paint a picture of a cat, usually, I'd suggest painting four legs, a tail, whiskers, and a sort of tiny nose.
It's kind of the same thing. Most ravers have them beads, glow sticks, weird hair. Liquid Kiddies have those white gloves, etc... Anyway, it's just a generalization of ravers.
Then again not all cats have four legs or a tail or whiskers or a tiny nose, but that's the generalization used to paint pictures of cats. Anyway, it was only a suggestion... Um.. I appologize to anyone if I've offended them by suggesting raver beads. (Ah.. The Canadian in me.)

the pose really bothered me earlier. i didn't see the 2nd rendition but i whipped something up. i realized i have no clue how to draw a guy with a bow and arrow thingie after doing this so it didn't come out right.

heheh.. thanks synj. Thats cute. I am going to work on an action pose. If you notice on my site ( dunno if you went there,) none of my art has much action.. I am trying to work on that..
B2: i am thinking of coloring it. Just haven't yet. The sketch's take me 15 to 30 min.. the detail is the bitch. I can do the sketches at work ( I sell video games ;p [electronics boutique]) but coloring requires time.. which being its x-mas and I work retail, I have very little time. So I guess once I get a chance to really sit down, I'll color it.
David (mr hiemey) says his back looks to stiff. I need to make is bend more, so I guessi'll work on that as well. Thanks all.. and thanks for the sketch synj.

Heh, that's definitely a synj sketch.
Anyway, Ivey, I like the hair you've got on this guy, looks really cool. I think that some details of the pose might help make him read better though. The right hand holding the bow could be done a little better...maybe moving the handle of the bow a little more towards the knuckles can help (ha, just noticed the XTC underneath the handle). Anyway, you could also separate the legs a tad, move his left leg back, and maybe tilt his hip slightly up to his right, some antiposto (sp?) if you will. This will help the image loosen up a tad. The wings look nice. The second pose is ok though I'd try putting yourself in that very same pose. You might find that you'd be a little off balance. Don't be afraid to put yourself in a pose and look in a mirror or something...I don't have access to models or anatomy books either so I'm forced to do this all the time Try switching the legs so that the right leg is the leading one and make sure that the lower leg is longer than the left lower leg you've got there now. The current leg would be fine if you just moved the foot back farther and under the butt more.
If you'd like I can post a couple drawings of archers I've done in the past to show you a couple different poses with bows both drawn and relaxed. I'd have to do that later since I'm at work right now. Oh, and just an idea on the raver beads...make them a little bigger but make the middle one a big roundish heart =)

Ok, late post...company Christmas party was right after work, heh. Drinking, gambling, hostesses...ahh, well down to business.
Scanned the sketches in that I mentioned. I also did a quick over draw of your image to show you what I was talking about earlier. The red lines are showing the slight tilt I was talking about and the side figure just illustrates it further by showing that in a pose like this the hips will tilt in the opposite direction of the shoulders...it'll help take out that stiffness Mr. Heimey mentioned. The three sketches here are just a couple old ones I did...tried cleaning up the scans a tad to show the hands better. Hopefully they help show how a bow is usually held, particularly the handle area.
So, hope these help any with the final pics

OK, I did some more wook on good ole cupid. As for his look, he's suppsed to be "looking" if you didn't notice, this is his last arrow. Thats whyt the pack is tilted and not straight with arrows. Guess no one cught that. I liked the idea of pirecings... I added raver beads, but I think the heart necklace looked better. In his pocket there are some glow sticks.. I'll work on making those noticeable later. I also did some detail on the wings..... I guess I'll work on this experesion later.
tell me what ya think

Ok.... and this one.. this is the FIRST time I've done a pose like this... and I don't have a model or a book ( I need that damn book "the nude figure") I have never had an art class (except one in Highschool with a silly german guy who gave me an A even thought I didn't turn stuff in) so I KNOW the pose is wrong... but as an Idea and a sketch.. how is it.. what should i add? ETC

It's turning out nice. The kneeling one, the lower part of the left leg is a tad short, but that's cool if it's your style. I really like the wings in the posing one. Wings are kind of tough to draw, but I think you did a pretty good job with them. umm.. oooh! I just noticed the rad hair style too. Hmm.. So you gonna colour it? Looks pretty cool.
