Hello everybody,
I really like Doug Chiang's artwork. His techniques are outstanding. The same goes for Feng. His linework is some of the best I've ever seen. Their technique is almost the same. I've always wanted to try that technique, so today I did some doodling. Starting with a very light grey, drawing basic shapes very loose. Then more detailed the darker it gets. Finally. outlining with a thin black pen. I didn't have any colored paper, so I couldn't make those cool highlights...
I've always started with a pencil, drawing the outlines. This was really a different approach. I need some practice to get it right, but I think it's a very fast technique. Keep in mind that this is just doodles guys. It was done really quick. Anyway, hope you like it.

Hello guys, thnx!
Milkman: I made these drawings very sketchy and very fast. So my outlines maybe are a little rough. When I look at them now, maybe I should have been more accurate on the light and shades. But I like rough lines, I think they very often capture a lot of things that disappear when you are painting originals, with a lot of accuracy and details... These pics are sketches - they have nothing to do with original work.
And I have to say that this technique is excellent if you want to build your shapes fast. So I can really understand why Feng works with a technique which is a lot like this. I don't want to compare myself with him though, his works are at a totally different level of profession! |

hey cool pics man ...I like the grey scale shading style myself I think a lot of illustrators are picking it up now..anyways looks good just tighten up you pen line work a little and you will have it down..aslo be a little more subtle with your grey values! |

Hi Wicked,
Since it's my first shot at drawing like this, others might do this different... I use a light grey marker, drawing basic shapes, think a little bit on the lightning, but not much. Then I use a darker grey, this time I'm a little more careful. But still the basic shapes are the important thing. The darker I go, the more detailed and accurate the drawing get. Finally I used a thin black pen to outline it, and added some details. The colors on the girfl where just added on top of the greys, but before the outlining. (Damn that drawing sucks!)

You mean the Doug Chiang from Starwars? Concept artist from episode 1?
He rocks yeah!
Your sketches ain't tight enough (compared to doug) but come close in style. Looks great!
Hope to see some more soon!
