Personally, I think you should have used more of a blue background and lighting instead of that purple. I play trumpet as well and I usually associate blue with the music for some reason. (but that is just a mental thing for me) Anyways, blue would also symbolize "the Blues" as in jazz and R&B. I like the pic though.

I like your style much
it seems to me very unique
and your use of colors is great

my only suggestion would be
to add some more shapes of the people in the bg

Beautiful.

What brushes are you using? Do you have any special method for selecting your colors?

Damn Janne, never fail to impress aye.

Thats cool ass pic you've done there mate.

Is that a crowd in the background there....like a smoky jazz bar by chance?.

Crits. The arm closest is looking a little flat, could use some lighter tones there. Considering he's purple aswell, its a little to monotone (for use of a better word). Not saying to change any colours just possibly give the guy a slight colour *tweek*, to place a bit of seperate emphasise.
A nit picky comment- the sax is a tad to orange.

man I love your style....your from Finland, I just noticed. Whats the deal with these bloody fin's!
What is it you do Janne?

Looking great as always.. great atmosphere and color.
i think his hand (the one closer to us) could use a bit more definition. that's about it.

thanks all! glad you like the style... i have been wondering if i'm going too far with it though... i mean if it looks i'm getting lost with the style thing and forgetting about the basics(something i think i should concentrate more on).

Chapel: you play trumpet? coolness! i actually counted on that nobody knows how to hold that thing or anything, so i would get away with this, but apparently it's almost natural looking then? (well, i did check some reference for the position of hands) i left the blue out because i think i have been bit overusing it lately but i agree with your point.

Icannon: hehe. sure, but he is a drunken jazz artist anyway...

Funfetus: i'm using custom brushes in painter. no special methods whatsoever... perhaps some applied color thery(the little i know about it).

Lukias: what's the deal with the finns? i have no idea thanks for the comments though!

You know what.. I didn't even really look at the hands. You actually have it backwards. The left hand holds the trumpet around the "valves". The ring finger on the left hand controls the bottom tuning slide, so there is usually a loop around it. The "keys" are directly above the valves and right now you have them a little further down. The bell actually is a little longer after the valves. Didn't really think you were going for realism though.

Check out this site. One of the world's greatest trumpet players and it has some links to trumpet sites for reference. http://www.users.bigpond.com/BJBromley/frm-main.html

Chapel: eheh, i knew i had something wrong with it thanks for the advice and the link. i wasn't going for realism per se but still i think hand positions should be at least somewhat realistic.

Blues to harsh/overbearing.

The warmer tones of the dude should stay (from original), but perhaps a more subtle background blue would distinguish different elements better.

I just feel it needs a touch of something, whether it be more highlights or lighter tones on the guy, or a slight colour change from him to smoky background. Its just a wee bland at the mo....

Very nice Janne,

I've done a lot of art about music myself, and I played trumpet too. I like the style, slightly warped look to it. I think you can keep this style, but alter just a couple things to make it look less akward to trumpet players. 1. just flip it horizontal to make it the right hand pushing the valves. 2. the hands should be in the same place, as if they're holding a ball. This would involve moving the valve hand back toward the other hand, thereby making the bell longer too.

I like the face and colors. Very expressive. Excellent balance of realistic/abstract.

The blues look nice, but I would have left the warm tones from before.
