I am coloring another pic, so far all I have are the flats, again. But the artist, my friend Warin Johnson, wants me to create a firey (for lack of a better word) background. And before I start shading I'd like a little help.

As you can see the artist is highly influenced by anime, the original characters from the upcoming video game Vagrant Story.

im assuming that big grey thing is a sword. but the scratches on it or whatever make it look kinda like cloth. i think its great tho, although the background could use more.... fire. its sposed to b firey, yet all i detect is a few splotches here and there. where's the chick's mouth? the veil or whatever has a wrinkle, that looks like a mouth but its not because then her mouth would b extending outside her face.

anyway, im just a crazy newbie and stuff so u can ignore me.

Thanks fr the reply, but I was asking how to create a nice fire effect, and I can't do anything to the image because I didn't draw it, I'm just the colorist.

Don't have any tutorials but here is an example that we colored from a pic by Humberto Ramos, maybe it can give you some inspiration.

this is some flames drawn in photoshop (but you can use any program that has a smudge tool and a gradient tool). All you need to do is make a tear shaped selection, fill it with the gradient that you want your flames to be, eg. red and oragne, blue and white etc. Now deslect and set the sumdge tool to 70% pressure and make squiggly marks pulling the gradient up into tips. Use different size brushes for varation. Takes about 15 mins.

tigereaten posted a picture where he wanted a fire effect, and a bunch of people helped him with it, and it worked out nicely in the end. try a search for that thread. his art wasn't linework, but it still might jumpstart your imagination.
