It's starting to be a real pain in the @$$(literally cuz I'm sitting on my @$$), but it's worth it. You know, one of these days, I should try drawing a video game character like this.

is it really fun trying to paint over a real picture and wiping out the rest of the background with a white brush?
i mean cmon its so obvious....just by looking at the cut out marks from the brush on the hands etc... not to mention the weird order ... half head done , half body...

To me she looks more like Christina Aguilera! Her face is too sharp, and the hair color is off. SMG has a cube as a nose.

her right arm looks a tad too long. Other than that I think you just need to finish her.

The hell. I didn't trace this. What's up with you peeps? The reason the edges look all weird, is cuz I used the mouse to draw the shape of the arm with the selection tool. If you don't believe me, try it yourself. Use the mouse, click on that little thing that turns the page to pink, and with the eraser, choose the area that is going to be selected. When you're done selecting the area, reverse, and the area should be selected. Then paint on the selected area. When you're done, deselect the area and you'll see that the corners are all fucked up. So get the smudge tool and smudge along the edges.

Dude, I don't believe this. I just post a pic that I'm putting a lot of time into, and you're acussing me of tracing? What the fuck is this?

"click on that little thing that turns the page to pink"
Sorry, but I didn't know what that thing was called. Here's the name for it. "Edit in Quick mask mode."

It's still not finished, so I still have to make some touch ups.

About her arms, yeah I've been reading some responses about it. Some people say her left arm is out of proportion, her right arm is too long, etc. I'll keep these in mind when I work on it next time.

Her cube nose-yeah, I know, but I don't like that cube nose, so I just changed it.

As for her face, I couldn't get her face right. The more I worked on it, the worse it got. I don't know if I should mess with her face more, cuz I don't want to mess it up anymore than it already is.

baro, if people think you traced/cloned it and you didn't, you should take it as a compliment not an insult.

if it really bothers you, post the pic you used as a reference as proof.

Thanks for trying to help, Justin Kraemer. ^_^ I think I heard that name b4. It's kind of hard to take it as a compliment. I put a lot of effort and time into this pic, and many times I got upset cuz I couldn't do some of the parts right(like the face which some people mentioned). And it hurts to hear such responses.

Well, here's the pic that I'm drawing from along with the painting that I'm doing. Keep in mind that I'm doing this with the mouse without any outlines(It's not the smartest thing to do, I know, but I wanted a little challenge, plus trying to outline with mouse wasn't working well, and I wanted to do this pic entirely in photoshop).

bj91x: Sorry to hear you're getting all this hassle man. I could tell you the story of a man called pierre...

I like the pic, the attention to proportion is very accurate. However, I would recommend starting from a darker background colour as it might make putting in the background details easier.

well, part of the reason i'm really skeptical is because the quality of your work seems very inconsistent.

like this, for example, which is also by you:

that's why i'm being skeptical. And how about seeing the true size of that photo you're working from without the PS filters?

Well, I like to have variety, so I tend to do things differently. The pic you posted is my favorite style. Sketchy, a litlle realism, and japanese anime style. That pic was you posted was done in less than 2 hours if that's what you're wondering. Yeah, my pics are very inconsistent. Hopefully, this helps.

First my personality is kind of weird. It's almost like I have multiple personality syndrome or what ever. I do have post traumatic stress syndrome.

Second, I like to draw according to.. um it's style. Okay, how can I put this. The pic you posted is from a fighting game made in japan. So, to fit the personality of the pic, I used a sketchy and anime like look. to match the mood of the characters and the game.

For the Sarah pic, she's a real person. And since I was drawing from a photo, I decided to make it look as real as possible.

If you looked at my Ulala pic, it's also different. She has no outlines, yet she doesn't look real. She has more of a low detailed 3d computer look, which is what I was going for.

Hope that helps. If you think those pics are inconsistent, check out some of my pics from the past. Looking at some of th pics, you'd think I sucked like hell back then, but then again, look at some other pics that I did at the same time perioed, and you'd think they were done by two different people.

okay, I just switched the photo of Sarah with a bigger one. man, my pic pales in comparison to the photo. Oh, well. oh, and the color is different cuz that's not the photo I'm drawing from. The photo I'm drawing from has much darker look to it cuz the scanner sucked. That photo I justed posted was from the internet. they are the same except for the color tone.

What's this Tommy v Shauno? That'd be Jin v Huoarong

I don't know. I'll not partake in the debate more than to say that the face in the drawing just looks too much like a blurry photo.

I think it does kinda look traced on the face, but the body isnt for sure. Look at the right shoulder, its too big, and her left hand is right etc. There are planty of differences in the pic, but im not quite sure about the face.

Those aren't supposed to be the names of the characters, it's a pic for a Tekken tournament, the names are those of the participants. On the page where it's used, there are links to the matches and stuff.

I will just say this: If I was on the net and did a lot of "video game art", I would personally head over to bj91x's page and see if any of my own art was "featured"... I'm not saying that he plagerizes all his stuff.. but if he doesn't plagerize, his style, or rather lack of a distinct and consistent personal style, certainly lends itself to that interpretation.

I think it's possible, but pointless.

Someone with little art experience can sit down and with enough time, exactly duplicate a photograph using whatever tools - colored pencils, photoshop, whatever. Hey, I used to be good at doing that, but it's just about pointless to do.

It'd be a better idea to set up a still life by your computer and try to replicate that for hours on end. That way you can even see how the sun moving affects the lighting of your subject. Or go to a coffeeshop with your sketchbook and draw all the people there, and all the people walking by. That's tough to do! They move so fast! But you learn a lot more about seeing things and translating what you see into art.

Replicating a photograph only gives you a little bit of facility with the medium, and allows you to analyze how another artist solved a problem. So I don't like critiquing these things. I believe anyone can do this to any degree. Impress us with your own vision. Then we can give you some real feedback.

I can't believe this.
[quote]
I will just say this: If I was on the net and did a lot of "video game art", I would personally head over to bj91x's page and see if any of my own art was "featured"... I'm not saying that he plagerizes all his stuff.. but if he doesn't plagerize, his style, or rather lack of a distinct and consistent personal style, certainly lends itself to that interpretation. [/qoute]

You think I plagiarize other people's style? Look, I'm sorry that you don't think I have a style, but I do have a style. If you don't like it, fine. You don't have go on and say that I'm ripping people off. Just because you think you see resemblance between my stuff and some other people's stuff, you say I am ripping others off? My style is a combination of sketch, realism, and japanese anime. That's how I like to draw. That's not a style that I stole from someone and my drawings are not ripped off from other people. When I was a kid, I used to draw from looking at other art. So, I'm sure I was affected by the artists and it would show in my art. But to go on and say things like you.... well what you said is only offensive. I drew a lot and came up with a style that I like so don't go around saying that I'm ripping people off. Just cuz I was affected by other artists, doesn't mean I am plagerizing. What, you think your stuff is 100% original? Yeah, right.

So, the face matches up almost exactly. Great. That's what I was going for. So that's your reason for saying that I was tracing? That's why you're saying all these offensive stuff? Were you here when I was drawing? Uh, no. It took me hours just to do the face and I did my best to make the proportions just like the photo. The reason her body doesn't match the proportions right, is cuz I'm still not done. Soon, I'm going to make the rest of her bodies match. Her left shoulder is too high, and not long enough. Her right shoulder is too bid, right arm too long, she seems a little fat, etc. I'm going to fix all these and try my best so that I got the proportions right to make it look as accurate as possible. I am personally very happy with the proportions of her face. I'm proud of it. Sure her face doesn't look like the photo, but I'm still not done with the pic, so hopefully, I can make it look better(cuz honestly, my pic pales in comparison to the photo) If you can't believe that I was able to make my pic look almost exactly like the photo, that's fine. Don't go around saying all these offensive stuff without any proof.

Seriously, what the hell is your problem? Did I do anything to you? No. So, why do you go around and say all these flaming shit? What just because you THINK something, you have to go on and offend someone? Okay, so let's say that I did trace. If I did, then I deserve all these crap. But did you think that you could be wrong? Did you think that if you're wrong, you could be hurting people's feelings? Without knowing what you say is true or false, you just go and say it anyway, without thinking how you sound. That's not enough. You have to go and try to proove that I did trace and try to hurt my feelings, without thinking that you could be wrong. Hell, isn't this forum suppossed to be where all the good artists and people who want to learn come? So what's up with all these crap?

I appreciate that some of you are tying to help me out with the pic, so you guys can ignore this. Thanks to some of you people that are trying to help out.
