A design for a character I'm thinking about animating. I wanted to keep it fairly simple and somewhat reminiscent of stop-motion characters. My sister thinks he looks rather freaky, so I'm looking for some other thoughts and criticism..... Any ideas?

Nice, really good coloring. I really like the eyes/facial hair. The only things i think you should change is the groin/crotch area, its far too wide for the short legnth of his legs, and i think you should add more extremes in the coloring, darker darks and lighter highlights. Other than that, looks awsome. |

Haha. That's great. I like it a lot. The coloring is really nice. He does look freaky, but that makes him look more interesting. Great pic.
Jezebel-I like your sig. ^_^

Oooh now I like this a lot! It is very Tim Burton as A.Buttle said - the big round eyes that do it (Jack Skellington - Nightmare Before Xmas)
Trying desperately to think of something to crit...
Erm... Only thing I can come up with is that the body and hands don't actually look that old. Any way to give them more of the old man character?
As for freaky - hell old men are freaky!

Wow, thanks for all the possitive commments! Tim Burton-esque?! I guess that'd be the simplistic head form and large eyes, eh?
johnboy - my original pencil doodle had a narrower stance. After I scanned and shaded the upper body, to me it looked like he was fairly off balance with legs. My other thought in having his legs wider apart was that while animating him I would have the slight appearance of longer legs and would be able to get away with having such short legs. However, do you have a quick sketch on your thoughts for a narrower stance? Lighting... hrmm... When he becomes a 3d model I'll then light him according to his environment/emotion. I wasn't actually that concerned with lighting on this doodle, I just wanted to figure out the form a bit more.
synj - hey! I hope I responded to your email before...? I've had a couple of email crashes and sadly lost my inbox. If your email was in there, sorry. I'm definitely going to animate this guy. Though I'm now back into a project (animating frogs all day) so unfortunately I'm not sure how long it'll be until I get this guy moving. I think I'll probably have a primitive 3d version of him next week sometime. I'll post it here first!
Ampa - I really should watch Nightmare Before Christmas again. I saw it once long ago and wasn't in the right mood. I should definitely take a second look at it. The body and hands... ermmm. I actually based the body's tear drop shape on my grandfather. He has very little chest and a belly that juts out. (I think due to Polio?). I agree with you on the hands, though! And, actually - ahem - I drew those hands to be in mits, and then forgot to colour them that way. Ooops! Though when his hands aren't in mits, any idea on how to make them look older and not just more freaky? White hair on the knuckles?
micke - hehehe. Thankfully I didn't have to be on Cyrstal Meth for a week to draw him. =)

Very nice. Looks as has been stated before very burtonesque. There's another artist that I cant think of right now...grr. The guy that draws the Eleanore comic. Oh well.
Only problem I can see is that the hair needs a little more definition. I think it's hair. The white stuff around his face and on his head. Almost looks like he has a little cloud clinging to him right now. Other than that, excelent work.Oh one more thing, it looks like he has soe backlighting to him as well but there is no shadow for it..
All in all I love it though |

I love the character design.
If I had one thing to offer it would be to bring some color variation into it. What I mean is that your different areas are all very compartmentalized in their color. The shadowed areas of the greenish shirt are just darker green, the face is just darker peach, etc. Bring some blues and cool violets into your shadows, and some warmth into your highlights. This should make eveything "pop" more and unify it. |
