*me runs and grabs sketch pad*
I just recently got Photoshop 6.0 and it was working handily dandily until just now where every other action I take is delayed. I tried assigning more RAM, I tried restarting, I tried a bunch of crap. Damnit. Just when inspiration struck. This happened to anyone before?

yeah me 3.. But mainly got laggy when i ran like 20 windows of explorer at the same time =]
I unchecked "use cache for histograms" and assigned up to 50% use of ram. It got better.

Re Photoshop,
Make sure you have Lots of ram, if possible, dont run anything else while in photoshop, including the system tray programs, assign 90+ % of available ram to photoshop. My personal opinion, install as much ram as you can afford (i.e. 256, 512, etc). If you notice it getting slower and slower, try to save and reboot. |

And don't forget to run winNT because win9x doesn't use more than 128Mb of RAM :p

This is a recognised bug in PS6 - go read Adobe support forums for more info and some suggested work arounds. I guess there will be a patch some time since PS6 has some pretty major / annoying bugs in it... Eg. Almost all network / comms software will not work with PS6 on certain systems. Problems with ASUS mobos etc etc. |

well yeah, you read it right hehe
128Mb is all that win9x platforms will use.. And yep, winME is a win9x platform.

Hummm I must disagree, I use WinME and have 512Mb of ram and all my PSD files will consume all the ram available.
I assign 100% ram to Photoshop witch will give PS 450Mb of usable memory. Photoshop will automatically reserve a small percentage of your ram for windows (I dont remember how much though).
However, WinME (not 98) does not support more than 512Mb of ram, anything more and ME becomes too unreliable and therefore unusable. (Proven by test conducted by TheRegister)
I dont use NT because it will consume far more ram than win9x. I know that extra consumption is to greatly improve the reliability of NT but I will get more use from my ram in 9x. If you do not know what I am referring too here is an example: A PSD file that consumes 355Mb of ram in 9x will consume roughly 480-500Mb in NT.

Yes you can stick 512 or a gig in it, but it wount use it! It will format only 128 mb and the rest will be empty space.. Try it, go find 128Mb stick with same latency and do benchmarks..
PS: oh yeah, proven by win9x CODE! muahaha.
Also what faustgfx bum said, because winNT was targeted at servers and workstations, it uses RAM in larger quantities and far more efficiently (you have actual CONTROL of how your ram and swap used)
on other note.. 128+ ram is not the only thing that win9x doesn't support. I know some people who have dual PIII computer but hmm lets see, win9x doesnt support dual processing!!! LOL wasted $1000 eh?

Ok, well here's the diagnosis now: I did what [Shizo] recommended and put 1 for the number of caches for histograms. Then I upped the RAM usage to 80% (it was on 60%). Much better!
And as for Win9X not using more than 128 RAM, I don't know how accurate that is. When I bought my computer, it had 128. Then I upgraded it to 256 like a year later. It certainly worked more effectively and I noticed I could run pretty comfortably, say, Photoshop, ICQ, a couple browser windows and Image Ready. *shrug* I dunno. |

I still disagree.
I know what you are referring too; its the Himem.sys that may be limited to 128Mb as it was limited to 64Mb with Win95. But Windows itself is NOT limited to 128, it will continue to use all the ram available just not as efficient as NT.
Although this is talking about 95 it still applies to 9x (just replace 64 with 128)
It is true that Himem.sys has a limit of 64MB on certain platforms, and it's also true that Himem.sys is required to load Windows 95. But Windows 95 itself is not limited to 64MB, paradoxical though that may sound. (PcMag Online)
I know NT is better for photoshop than 9x but I get more use of my ram in 9x sacrificing stability. WinMe is (for me) far more stable than 98 and I have had no trouble so far.

I agree with snakebyte, I have 256 and my photoshop doesn't lag at all, I also notice a very good difference between my applications the way they used to run and the way they run now. Specially Quake 3 Arena and Photoshop 6.0
My photoshop doesn't lag at all, my system specs are:
PIII 733Mhz 133
256 MB Ram
15 Gig HD
3D Prophet II GeForce II with 32 MB
17" Relisys monitor
crapload of fans inside the case
other stuff everybody has and is not worth mentioning.
I used to run Photoshop 6.0 on my PIII 550 with 256 RAM and it still ran smooth and didn't lag, I use Photoshop for 6 hours straight sometimes. I, however, do notice a difference between the time when I had 128 and now. |

ffnex, i have this one very nice ~580 meg .psd here, wanna try that? it rules to work with files of similar size..
if my system can't handle it, i'd really like to see yours not lag with it.

Is the 580Mb saved (viewed from win explorer) or open (viewed from the scr: window on the bottom left of PS)???

That virtual city i like! But now i wonder why the image is so huge :L
But if printing purpose is the cause here, then you know how much you wish it was a vector image eh? =]

yeah, vectors are quite lovely for texture for example.
wouldn't you like to work with a image of a textured 3d model about 1.5 meters wide and 1 meter tall when every tone of the texture surfaces was a vector?
such a good idea shizo, i'm proud of you.

No no no, you fake bum! I meant if it was vector image, doesn't necesserely mean the same content. Because Vector based stuff is great for printing... Just pop up the resolution for printing and image stays the same quality. Shweet! No 1Gb files ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |
