oh yet another very nice picture frost. I love the lightning and also that volume you've got into the face. It's such a rich feel to it. Great! Don't care if there's any flaws in it, because the overall looks very good.

Frost man, you are WAY too modest!
You are among the top talents in these forums. Your work always impresses the hell outta me, yet you are always putting your work down. You seriously need to have a big glass of ego juice
Both of these images are incredible. Your choice of colours are always so perfect. If you don't stop putting yourself down I'm going to be forced to start an official Pro-Frost campaign.

Frost,
Good stuff. I'd have to agree with Joachim; I love the lighting and volume on the girl. Very great stuff. I notice you seem to improve in leaps from time to time. Great work, man. |

The Dude - Thanks! =) I see flaws in my work, and I get annoyed at how I try to make it look real, but always fall VERY short of that objective. The lighting in this example is probably too intense, unrealistic, especially since the ambiant is moderate... and there are some shading flaws, not to mention the anatomical ones... so, in a way, I'm still full of crap. hehe.
Francis - Thank you! But I'm still learning a lot... not necessarily practicing, but getting concepts and such straight in my head. The tough job for me is not painting, but more understanding things and applying those rules to things I make up, so in the end, I think it still ends up looking like fake junk, but, one day...
AliasMoze - Thank you very much. It really means a lot when the likes of you, Francis and Shane take time to compliment. I'm glad you find improvements in my work, I guess I don't see my work subjectively and don't see such changes. =) Thanks!
Shane - Thanks a lot Shane, really appreciate it. =) It somehow means something to me that you'd say that, considering Epic turned me down a few years ago...
Sear] - Thanks! =) |

Wow, that face looks really good Frost! It's got your colors (hey, you always say that to me too ), but perhaps more vivid than usual - you've really hit the mark with the lighting I think, it looks simple in a way (I mean, it's not "in your face" flashy, and that's good) yet it's very atmospheric. The 3-dimensionality reads very well too, and I love the expression. Yum yum, I bow to you

Hi Frost
I'm answering kinda late cause i did'nt know you had posted a new painting in here.
I really like your way of shading, soft and
sharp at the same time, something that i'm trying to do The colours are great, very warm with a colder background.
The only things i would comment is the ears
nose and the eyes. Nothing big, but only a few suggestions(i'm being picky now).
The ears are not aligned with each other and one of the ears is smaller than the other
(just slightly)
One of the sides of the nose is bigger than the other and is a little big in my opinion.
The eyes are a little too dark i think. if you squint with with your eyes and looking at the girls eyes, they become black with a highlight. Maybe making them lighter would help and add a little more green, yellow to the white areas of the eyes would help.
As i said i'm being very picky. The picture looks great
Glad to see you posting again.

Saffron - Hey thanks! I'm really glad you like it. =) But it lacks softness as you do so well, it's too much "in your face" type... oh well. =)
Micke - Thanks a lot! That is very good input. =) I agree with the eyes (which are terrible=) ears and nose, but I think that the sides of the nose being of different sides may be caused by the shading I put in, which may be wrong and give a false visual... her left nostril shadow on her nose needs work and more thinking. The problem is, I have no clear idea myself where the light is situated in 3d space, so I only estimate ray casts, which end up being different on each portion... I should have made myself some reference sketches with light positions so I could look at it and have a better idea of shadow castings. Hmm, all part of the learning process I guess. =) I really love the hard vs soft shadows... thanks to Spooge and Fred for covering those. =)

I second that Rinaldo. Frost is way to modest. Maybe he's just fooling us around...playing with us until we become his artistic slaves...Yeah that's it!
seriously, though... Great work Frost. Some areas that look a little flat (in the girls-face picture) but thats really minor. Great lighting and colorchoises...Show more, please!

Frost you rock Both your pics are excellent! They have a really nice mood and you got the lighting spot on. The first would make great pic to hang on the wall, very relaxing and calming to look at and will warm you up on those cold winters nights.Heh, Heh Hmmmm, let me just put my feet up... ;P |

Beautiful Scene Frost, you've transformed the view out your window like a step back in time.... it's a neat idea and very inspiring, not to mention such wonderful use of your colours.
Great lighting on the gal

Thank you all very much.
Well, here's more (crap)... first an image I made today which I like (for now), and two scans of pen drawings on paper.
Any comments on the girl anatomy welcome... I tried going for more realistic, non-supermodel woman.

The Top image is awesome; so simplistic yet so accurate. Would love to see that refined (although I absolutely love it already).
Oh, almost forgot, you suck. |

Hello Frost,
The first one, executed in 7 minutes I can see. From looking at the picture, it is obvious that those 7 minutes were used effectively, nice. I actually reminds me of a Zorn pic, it kind of has the same mood to it, it was also monochromatic. Although his had people and horses instead of cars. Very nice frost, it got motion.
The woman. It seems as though her arms are a bit too short.
Nice work Frost!

Hey Frost, looks good!
My only suggestion would be to do the rain one over, but take a half an hour, do it the same looseness, same level of detail, but go Slower. Think about everything you are doing and why. Think about your bigger shapes first and vary the brush sizes. This will help your shapes a lot. Fast and loose is good, but like playing a piano, you have to start slower.
I saw a painters easel once (who painted very loosely) with a huge sign above it the said think! Think for 10 minutes, paint for one.
You asked me once where I felt you needed improvement, and I think I have an answer for you now. I told you to draw from life more, and I stand by that. Why? Cause it will help you do exactly what I am talking about above. You cannot copy shapes working from life, generally. This will help you with those niggling little structural problems that crop up once in a while. You have to think very carefully about what you are doing. You MUST simplify because of time. That simplification will be the basis of better shape design, which is where you should be going. Everything you can leave out will make your images stronger. I see up to now a fascination with surface and the turning of form from light to shadow. Try to think more simply about the graphical shapes that make up your picture.

Frost! You got spooge's attention! Hooray!
I would agree with spooge (could I ever not? hrmm..) saying to vary brush sizes. You should have used smaller brushes doing the cars/road more in the back. Lamposts are also done with same brush.
Let's follow his advice and find a figure drawing class to attend and let's go together once a week like micke and joachim are (used to?) do. Or should we go play some hockey?

That looks very good Frost!
So few strokes I have a tendency of doing everything too complicated with lot's of strokes over eachother. The result is usually a mess. I agree with the brush sizes.
You can also take advantage of the pressure- sensitivity.
Keep up the good job!

Thanks a great deal everyone, I feel honored. =)
Francis - Glad you liked it. It was a very impulse drawing done quickly with no meaning. (what a messy desktop you must have... )
Void - I suck? Thank you.
Pierre - I never heard of Zorn, maybe I should look it up, and thanks for the encouraging words. =) Also thanks for commenting on the pen sketches, you're the only one that did. =)
Wildkat - Thanks dear! No, I wasn't driving, I was sitting down at work on a sunny day (but felt like rain in my head).
Sephiroth - Hey Seph, thanks! =)
Spooge - What can I say... you're absolutely right. I really need to get more serious about art though, and my involvement with this forum's artists is pulling me deeper into my desire to do better, to learn and create. I think it would do me a world of good to paint from life, and I'll try to devote time to it. Thanks.
Snake - Hey! Yes, let's find a figure drawing class, it'll be a good start. =)
Micke - Thanks for your comments! Yes, the brush was kept pretty much throughout the drawing except on a few small occasions. I made myself a set of hard brushes at work, but I thought it was a good idea to have them in binary-multiples (sizes 1,2,4,8,16,32,64,etc.).. I guess it wasn't such a great idea. =) I always have pressure sensitivity on, but I wanted to keep the values pure to give it that look, that contrast, keeping the image clear (although vague in shape by the brush size). I feel like I blend colors too much in my drawings in general, creating an un-interesting blur... just exploring I guess. =) Thank you!
