[Frost]

I need to draw/paint more, so I'll try to do so in the following days/weeks. I just wanted to start a thread where I will keep posting these images into each time there's something new, instead of starting another one each time.

Feel free to give out advice on how I can improve stuff. Thanks!

Great peice.. despite the flaws you pointed out, this is a really nice peice, it gives a real sense of the end of a long day.. The trees look good and the sky is cool too..

And i like how your picture has depth, not as many artist use perspective lately, its all about BAM, right in your face, not too much depth.. and not enough scenery..

If it isnt too much trouble, can you go a lil into how you made this cool peice?

Very nice Frost, particulary like the peach hue in the house windows. yum.

(/Edit: Was just looking over your painting again, have one tiny comment. The composition is a bit wierd -- too spontaneously filled, like a snap shot. The center of the painting is a post [at this moment I forget their names, gg 3am], one single dash in the center. It's too ordinary, perhaps if there was a pattern that lined the roads to make it more eye-catching. Too many, though, would crowd the balance of mass you have at the moment, which brings me to second comment.

...This would be to expand the size of the canvas, and include more details what the viewer can see -- hills, distant mountains, forests. More houses, perhaps, to suggest greater depth. The colors you used are absolutely lovely, and I think it would be nice to see that peach-lighting in other distant windows of houses, tiny flickering lights in the distance enveloped by hills.

Nightime - Thanks a lot for the pointers! Indeed, I don't know very much about image composition and guide lines to a focal point in the image. The image was simply created from the skyline from my window view, and the colors where of a nice configuration, so I decided to paint it in the little time it remained there for reference. =)

Joachim - Thank you. =) But I just think I'll keep this thread pumping with my images instead for a small while, at least I feel I'll be contributing to keeping this forum a little less crowded.

Nil900 - The image took me about 45 minutes to do. As I mentioned above, the sky colors did not stay very long so that had to be done in a hurry (2 minutes), then the out-of-perspepctive rest was just added after... hehe =)

Danny - Thanks Dan. =) Funny that you mentioned the panoramic canvas by doubling the horizontal, since I DID try that yesterday (weird!!)! I ended up downscaling the image near the beginning to the res you see here, so, that's pretty much out of the question for obvious reasons. =)

Everyone - Thank you very much. I'll most probably be posting a new image in, hmm, 12 hours or so... =) I might consider enlarging the canvas and making this one a bit better. See you later... got to get to work before my boss gets in... =)

PS - I'm the kind of guy that doesn't go over his pics, modifying them. I'd rather start a new one from scratch and learn from there, so please don't get your hopes up on me making changes to the pics shown here... I MIGHT, but chances are I won't (plus I'm a lazy bum =).

Well, as promised, here's another one I started yesterday night. which I just finished. I got fed up and wanted to release it, so anyway. I didn't flip to see the flaws or anything like that, sorry. =) This was primarily a ligthing and shadowing excercise, I hope Fred can point out some flaws in it. Please comment on it and point out what I did wrong and how I should have done better. Thanks! (oh, that took a total of ~5 hours, no reference).

Oh, that reminds me. I got this problem in photoshop at work today, where I apply a contrast adjustment to a pic, and the result is different that what is in the preview window of the contrast modifier. I have limited knowledge of photoshop, but I know my way around ok... yet I spent 15 minutes trying to figure out what I had accidentally toggled, I tried everything I could think of in all the panels, tabs and preferences, and couldn't find anything... I eventually gave up, frustrated, and left work.

If anyone knows what this might be, let me know... or else I'll just trash my photoshop configurations and reset everything back... (I freakin' hate complexe software).

The light on the inside of her left bra support seems off-the lighting shouldn't extend higher than it is outside the support. Also, what's up with the bridge of her nose? I dunno, looks like someone busted her up quite a bit. You have quite complex shadows though-were you using reference? Some of them seem a tad chaotic, but in general they look right on. Nice job!

Great job on both pieces! I was going to comment on the scenery pic, however NIGHTIME said pretty much everything I was going to say. I would add just one thing from a composition point of view. You could add a compositional element up close. I think it would a. frame the composition, and b. push the depth even more.

The portrait looks great too! I would personally shrink the nose a bit, since it looks pretty big. However, if you want to leave it the way it is, then I think I would adjust the nostrils just slightly to match the size of the nose. Your call. I also think the eyes could use a bit more 'depth'. Fred made some great points in his eye-tutorial. Other than that though, I Love the rendering and think the chain around her neck is beautiful!

What kind of brushes/airbrush did you use to get such a smooth look?

Anthony - Regarding the light on the inside of the 'bra' support... yeah, I don't know where THAT comes from, I think I may have overlooked it while doing final lighting adjustments. Good eye. =) Her nose, hm, yes... hehe, I'm not very good at drawing noses. I guess I'll be practicing that a bit more for a while. Thanks! =) And no, I used 0% reference, so feel free to point out errors in shading... for one thing, I should have made the greener light have less effect near the center of the face as the surface becomes more perpendicular to the light source...

Liquid! - Thanks for the input and comments. The nose is a little big, and I might go back on it since there's a few comments on it. The eye note is also very valid, in fact, I always had problems rendering eyes, I guess it's a plain lack of understanding of their properties, also something for me to work on. =) I never used the airbrush in photoshop, everything is done by overpainting with the intensities I want, usually with a hard brush to get the tones right, then, in this case for example, sampling colors and tones from the image (ALT+click) and going over the portions I need to with a soft-edge brush. Snake Grunger also made me a great deal of different sized brushes which came in very handy while drawing the image, since I always paint with the brush set to opacity testing, and I rarely use the size option.

Anthony J - Hey, I remember that frozen dog! Hehe, kidding... just remembering the thread. =) The stuff on your site looks nice, perhaps a bit more flat then my stuff, but it comes out better and more realistic... I tend to over-exaggerate lighting and shadows, testing my knowledge of lighting... but in reality, many things as such are so subtle... I need to take a look at the larger picture instead of thinking in methods. Nice work, post the stuff you're working on when you're done!
