I've been really interested in Rembrandt recently. Luckily, there's a good library at the Art College, so I got a few books out. This pic is based on a portrait of Philip Lucasz by Rembrandt Van Rijn.
It's also kinda inspired by Dhabih's incredible Arbiter pic which he showed us a while back.

Well other than you need to make sure the eyes are on the same level.... the pic looks great. Really nice style. (His right eye is lower than his left giving him the hunchback from Notre Dame look) |

n8: Thanks man! That's the kinda effect I was going for.
Dives: Cheers! How come so many cool artists come from Finland? Is because of the demo scene or what?
Rinaldo: Thanks! BTW - Regarding your crit, I'm gonna be expecting a 10,000 word thesis tommorow!
Chapel: You're right about the level of the other eye. I might make some adjustments.
agent44: Thankyou!

Love the image. You always paint with very saturated colors. Love that.
But, (there has to be a but) I think you add a very dark color to separate the body from the background. Maybe you can add a slightly red dark tone to his right shoulder facing the green cloth like thing? His right side seems to be lit with a red light. Just an idea.
And also his neck seems to be very short and thick... Anyways, i love the picture.

I decided to give my two cents. I'm so tired I could only express myself by drawing. Words just don't come out..

Ceenda,
I don't have that particular pic by rembrandt handy, but I still have a couple comments. First, it's great to see some people here looking at the great old painters. I think a lot of us here look at too many comic books over some old masters.
Good work overall. It does have that dutch painting feeling, but I have to say it still looks like a computer painting more than an oil painting (which is fine). I think Bg may have been thinking this too when he made his drawing - what keeps it from looking more like a Rembrandt is the texture. Even Rembrandt's early works, which are smoother overall, are still very visceral, a quality which Bg's drawing capture's with its roughness.
But the other big element of Rembrandt's work is the lighting. You're certainly capturing some of that chiaroscuro quality here, as well as some of the fleshtones that the Dutch painters used. Again, I haven't seen this particular painting, but Rembrandt's skin tones usually seen yellower. Maybe it's just the dirty paintings and old books I've been looking at
Good work overall. Nice colors, nice light, nice details. But if you're going for Rembrandt, I think it needs to be looser.
Carry on!

Hmmm like it a great deal - really nice lighting, and certainly captures the Rembrant feel.
However his right eye seems a little off to me... a wee bit too small, and a little low. Or maybe it is an angle thing... Urgh can't descide now - perhaps it is just me, but have a look for yourself.
