Several people have asked me to show how I draw hair. Well. I dont usually fall for group pressure, but Ill make this an exception

This is a tutorial of a slightly wavy hair much like the one I painted in my self-portrait. I work differently with straight hair. But Im too lazy to make two tutorials

1) Here we pick a nice colour to work with. I usually take a slightly cold one, that way I get to add the warmer colours as highlights and shadows and still managing to make the hair look natural. Well. This is just a bit of hair that wont really fit unto any head Im afraid. Just did this to show you how I work.
2) Some very general lines in black here (separate layer) just to give a feel of where the locks will fall. Important that the lines are gentle and seem "natural" in how they fall.
3) I usually begin to add some different tones here. Mark the warmer colours! Some very basic highlights by using discreet, warm colours applied to some of the locks. I also begin adding shadows here, darkening some areas.
4) Continuing to work with the colours here... there are many different reflections in a hair, a myriad of different hues of the same colours.
5) So far Ive worked with the airbrush and a "hard" brush, not the soft edged one. Here, though, I pick the smudge tool and a soft brush, rather big in size, and begin to smudge the lines a little, in some places smearing out small "strands" of hair into the heavy lumpy locks you can see here. I also remove the layer of the "sketch" I put on the picture in step two.
6) Continuing on step five, I slowly smudge the edges to make them soft, and begin making the colours "flow" together more beautifully.
7) Here I work on the structure of the hair. To get rid of the feel of heavy and unnatural lumps of hair, I take a soft brush and the airbrush (I almost always use the airbrush) and paint gentle, rather wide but soft, lines going through the locks. I use the eyedropper tool to make sure I get the right colours all the time.
8) Heres the smudge tool again, drawing out the lines I painted in step eight. I also use the airbrush and put in some deeper variation in the colours.
9) Finishing the image, I usually make sure that some separate strands can be seen, and that I work over almost the entire hair with a very small smudge brush to give a real feeling of /hair/.

Ah. Thats it I guess. Hope it was of any use

Thank you very much Enayla! I really appreciate all the work you put into that tutorial. It should help me as well as others out tremendously.

Once again thanks, and I can't wait to see your future works of art.

If I had a penny for every time I was stunned senseless by Enayla's ability with hair, I'd be a disgustingly wealthy man by now.

This is very good. If only you had done it a couple of days ago. I struggled a lot with drawing the hair for my girlfriend's portrait. After numerous repainting I think I did pretty ok in the end though.

You have a lot of material to put together a homepage now. Take your two tutorials (or do you have more?), write a little about yourself (more than your name ) And voila, a homepage . You don't need to put a whole lot of effort into designing it, with your tutorials and links to your online galleries you would get plenty of visitors to stay anyway.

I'm sorry if I'm bugging you about the homepage but I would really like to have a good page to link to I prefer not to link to elfwood and toonscape directly, I want a homepage.

(Damn, I need to stop visiting Sijun.com. I get no programming done, you all just make me want to paint instead )

I am thrilled to see that so many people appreciate the tutorial!

Good that it wasn't just a waste of my time

As to what computer I'm using... uh... it's pretty crappy now. A P2... with a really lousy graphic card and...well... can't say the monitor is too pleasing either. Ah well.

I work in Adobe Photoshop 5.0 when I work from home. With an Intuos Tablet of the A5 size (perfect for me).

And as to my talent... mwa ha ha! I'm keeping that to myself! *giggle*
