Hi once again people,
here's some stuff I put together today.
I find drawing heads difficult, so any help appreciated.
Also, if you feel I'm posting junk and not showing enough respect for the space, and should leave it more to the obvious masters (spooge, liquid!, Joachim, Micke, Gecko, you know who you are...), then just let me know and I'll stop swamping this forum with my junk pictures....
Cheers, A. |

HEY, I really like the last one!!!
It reminds me a bit of Moebius' work, but I think it is really nice.
Your problem with the heads is about proportions I think...The woman's head has very big eyes, and the man's head has a small skull (do you call it like this in English???). Burne Hogarth's books are great about this kind of things.
But I think the anatomy of the 3rd. drawing is fantastic. |

I think you have a real beautiful quality in your linework, which you should keep. The way the lines run makes an image come to life, and is oftem extremely personal, it's almost like a signature.
Work a little more on your basic shapes, and you'll rock!

I think you are very productive Great images! the full figure drawing, is great.. one crit point I would move the axe up over his head, to strengthen the pose and silhouet.

I think you have some really nice sketches there, and like Kjetil said, just work a bit more on your basic shapes and maybe also the overall shape(like on the 3rd drawing were his head seem a bit to big for the body?!?) and your work will kick mucho ass!
Your faces are nice, don't seem much wrong to me. But if you want to improve as you said, I guess to try drawing them even more realistic and do lotsa angles that are more challenging will help a lot.

Nice work A - I too like the last one a lot.
The heads seems a little warped however, for example, the first girl on top has a long spikey chin, her left side of lips don't extend outwards enough as opposed to the right side, and her right eye is reaching too far right as well from what I can see. If you're going for realism, maybe you should scale down the size of the eyeballs and sockets a bit... but in general, they look very good, just a few things to work on. (Of course, I'm no expert myself, these are just from my observations).
Hmm, have you checked out Fred Flicks Stones' thread on head drawing, it's VERY very useful... check it out here.
(the images are gone, dang,...)

I actually like the two heads better than the full figure pose.
I agree with Kimzoll that the axe should be move up for a clearer pose, but overall it seems a little stiff. It looks more like a statue to me than a figure in motion. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it's a little too balanced or too rendered. But the pose could be loosened up a bit.

I quite enjoy the last one. For some reason it brings to mind the work of Ray Harryhausen. I think because of the definite dual light sources and the sculptured look.
Very nice.

I think these are great. On the face pics, the skulls look too small to fit the face.
That and some minor tweaking frost pointed out will make your heads great.
The axe pose is IMO best of the three. The anatomy is good, and the lighting excellent as well :) (The head does seem too big).
Keep wasting a lot of space in the future. I must warn you though, taking part in this forum might make you progress very rapidly and end up as one hell of an artist.

i think the sketches look really nice ... but just like the others said you should work on your proportions .... I have a book at home that explains really well the proportions of the human body, the muscles ... the whole stuff ... it's really good to read such a book ... it emproved my drawing for sure ...

Yeah you've got head issues like myself, nearly there but still needing a few tweeks.
The hell dude is awsome, I'm liking it alot.
Is it just me or is this modesty shit getting out of hand. I mean people who are blatantly good....and KNOW IT tend to say things like 'I'm sorry I shouldn't be posting crap like this' when it shits on the majority of the forum. I recall Spooge doing this.....posted some stuff from when he was sixteen saying that its embarrasing. Embarssing for whom?. I'd be *knowing* that what I did then is probably better than what 99% of the pop could turn out at that age.
Shit I thought I was pretty good but seeing what he turned out at that age is enough to make anyone sink into the floor. Actually it generally tends to come from those that are say....in the top 20% of forum members. This modesty, its not really modesty but you no exactly what mean.
A - Whats with your comment......do you honestly feel that your work is not up to scratch?. Either you've been living in a basement with some very talented guys who make you look bad and this hasn't exactly done wonders for your confidence or your looking for the classic "Crap!...no way, there awsome!" answer.
I mean these are good and when a member who isn't anywhere near as ....advanced (shall we say) hears this, then what are they gonna think?. *well he thinks his are crap and they shit on mine so I must really suck*.
Now I'm not sure how serious people are when they make these comments and if they really think how others may feel in reponse (as in I suck *hard*). It just seems odd.
I know people in general don't think deep into things their saying but It's been eating at me and seeing it for the umptenth time I just had to comment.
(sorry to bring this up in your post...but it'll be seen here)
Anyway, your good.....simple

Hmm, this thread took an (un)interesting turn...
Lukias & Malorum: Perhaps people like myself shouldn't say our work is crap, but, it is in fact what we feel towards our work. Compliments are always nice because it makes you feel like you did SOMETHING right and that is was not a wasted effort. A lot of the people who you'll hear this from are professionals who are good enough to notice the flaws in their work... that's probably one thing to notice... that the more you know, the more you expect of yourself and the higher your goals are... so even though it may look like absolute God's work in a JPG from the eyes of someone less experienced, the highly experienced and highly competitive professionals will notice a lot of errors, either in composition, color, form, shape, technique, etc. etc. etc. it's all part of the never-ending search for self-perfection... anyway. If I ever made people feel like crap because I call my stuff crap, I apologize. |

Lukias and others:
I think modesty is a good thing, especially where something as subjective as art is concerned.
I also like to try to feel out the mood of the artists in the forum, and work out the unspoken/unwritten etiquette, so that I DON'T piss people off. That's out of respect to the senior members here like you: This is your place, I don't want to spoil it for you, so in effect I'm asking permission to some in here and post my stuff.
I'm also prolific. I draw every day. I don't know if it's appropriate to post every day. Certainly, the feedback helps a LOT. It's almost scary to have access to such amazing talented artists for tutoring. You CAN'T get that at almost any place I know of.
Lastly, in terms of talent, I think your age comment is very valid. I know my illustration ability is pretty good, but when you consider I've been doing this (and stagnating badly for the most part) for longer than most of the young guys here, it really gets put into perspective. When these guys are my age, they are going to whup my ass!
So, thanks for your appreciation. It really, really helps to get me motivated, even just knowing that someone else bothers to look at my stuff, not just pass it by. If I've offended you, my sincere apologies. Please just remember that I'm new here (even if I'm older than most!!), and still learning the forum's ways.
Cheers, A. |

Crap in comparison. Compared to what you know you can produce...... But is this work you see the flaws in.....do you *really* think its crap....generally speaking?.
No let me answer that, no, you don't think its crap, just in comparison to better works (yours or others). But this does not make it crap.
I know what your saying but this was blatant
A's comments:
... then just let me know and I'll stop swamping this forum with my junk pictures....
Would he have posted them if he really thought they were shit. He hoped/new that he'd get comments, of a good nature, of course along with the crits. I can tell he's the sort who would've sat in class doodling with class mates telling him he's awsome, just like most people here. Theres no need for this 'compliment digging' as MaLoRum put it.
A - I don't want to get at you personally, but its an example that can be seen. I doesn't make me think any less of you (you might not give a shit anyway), its not like you've done a 'binder'.
Just uneccasary thats all.

Hey didn't see your there!
I know what you mean about being new, one has to tread very carefully, this place scared me and still does a little. People here get toey real quick and upsetting the wrong member can result in some hot fiery words.
This place mirrors ordinary life, in that it gets *clicky*.
This forums great, apart from the obvious tuition one can recieve, there also all sorts of attitude conflicts and the like. I think its great that the older and younger get into conflicts, it teaches you about yourself and your social skills etc.
Generally speaking everyones cool, I like the serious people, the sarcastic people, the mature parental types those with big tempers, the optimists and those that are intent on being negative.
I fucking love the greasers! "If I wanted to be someone I'd be you for a day". Some people have their heads lodges rather far up others arses....but just don't let it bring you down.....smile ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

A-
I love your work, but I have a question.
Whats with all the bald women? There was another bald woman in your space crew pic.
Bald women scare me almost as much as overly musclular women! Screw horror movies, if I want to be terrified I'll go watch the Miss Universe pageant or whatever it's called.
Some of those women look like Arnold Schwarzeneggar with funky breasts!
LOL
J/K man. Keep up the good work.
I agree with Joachim in that his head is somewhat out of proportion, but I like the lighting and lines a lot.
I for one would have NO problem with you "wasting" space on the boards! |
