Hello Sijun.com Forum Members!
Here are the rules and information regarding our first Digital Art competition here in the forums.
Let's start with the rules:
1. Working from a scanned in sketch is ok as long as the image is painted or colored digitally.
2. No photo manipulation.
3. Minumum resolution of 800x600.
4. Jpeg format.
In addition, by entering, you agree to the following to conditions:
1. I may display your work at my site in our galleries.
2. You agree to let Right Hemisphere make one post competition mailing. (Hey... gotta get the prize somehow!)
To submit an image just post it here to this thread... please do not 'reserve' space... that is annoying.
*********************************
The theme to this contest is to create a visual interpretation of the lyrics to the following song:
'The Ballad Of Curtis Loew' by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Here are the lyrics:
Well, I used to wake the mornin' before the rooster crowed,
Searchin' for soda bottles to get myself some dough.
Run 'em down to the corner, down to the country store,
Cash 'em in, and give my money to a man named Curtis Loew.
Old Curt was a black man with white curly hair,
When he had a fifth of wine he did not have a care,
He used to own an old Dobro, used to play it 'cross his knee
I give old Curt my money, he play all day for me.
Play me a song, Curtis Loew, Curtis Loew,
Well, I got your drinkin' money, tune up your Do-bro.
People said he was useless, them people all were fools,
Cause Curtis Loew was the finest picker to ever play the blues
He looked to be sixty, and maybe I was ten,
Mama used to whip me, but I'd go see him again.
I clap my hands, stomp my feets, try to stay in time,
He'd play a song or two, then take another drink of wine.
Play me a song, Curtis Loew, Curtis Loew,
Well, I got your drinkin' money, tune up your Do-bro.
People said he was useless, them people all were fools,
'Cause Curtis Loew was the finest picker to ever play the blues
On the day old Curtis died, nobody came and prayed.
Ol' preacher said some words, and they chunked him in the grave.
Well, he lived a lifetime, playin' the black man's blues
And on the day he lost his life, that's all he had to lose.
Play me a song, Curtis Loew, hey, Curtis Loew,
I wish that you was here so everyone would know
People said he was useless, them people all were fools,
'Cause, Curtis, you're the finest picker to ever play the blues.
***********************************
You can also download a 30 second clip of the song here:

This contest will be judged by an artist I will designate. This artist will not be a member or visitor of this forum. This contest will end on January 15th, 2001 at 12:00PM EST.
Let's get it on!

I will also volunteer for judging since I just received a big project at work and will have no time for entering this contest.

InDepth, that's very lame man.. I don't think you grabbed the song idea very well
What if i was listening to Marilyn Manson and you gave me a some country song? Bahh.. No no no, you gotta change the rule to "use any of your 1 favorite song".
Besides who cares about lyrics lol, lyrics suck.
/edit/
PS: judges? Thats for YOU to decide! You're the main competition organizer hehe. But whoever it is.. don't let it be Spooge Demon! I checked out 3dpalette.com's apocalyptic contest winners, and i was like... BAH!

Why don't we just scrap the whole idea? I just thought it would be nice to hold an impromptu contest and maybe get to see some great work out of it. Can't seem to agree on things though and people are already unhappy and it hasn't even started yet. |

I'm surprised at how many people are shooting this down. Obviously if you do not like the subject/rules then don't enter. But of course this is a forum so everyone has to add their opinion. The idea was for everyone to use the same song, then it could be seen how differntly it would be interpreted by different artists and styles.
I'll tell you what is retarded and lame...close minded people.

Micke had a very good point in InDepth's original post on the subject. Clients will ask you to do a lot of things that you personally might think are boring or stupid. To me the fact that something isn't personally interesting just poses a bigger challenge.
Don't give up on the idea, I think some good images might come out of it.
Plus - if it doesn't interest you - don't post an entry. Simple. |

He's the one who came up with the contest, right?
So I don't understand what the bitching is all about. I don't like the song either - so what? I should still be able to interpret it.
Just everyone interpreting their OWN favourite songs - what fun will that be? It's not like 90% of us haven't already done just that. My, my, what a challenge.
No, I think this is a great idea, really. So what if we don't like the song - we don't HAVE to join in if we don't want to. And besides, if we can't try to interpret something just because it doesn't fit our tastes... well... booohoo, cry me an ocean
I've already started on my picture

Hey all,
I am going to continue this effort... the judges will be myself and one other artist I designate... the scores for the images will be averaged and the image with the highest average wins. The topic will remain the same and as others have said... if you don't like it... don't enter.

I have'nt heard the song yet, but i really don't care. If it is a country song, so be it. when it comes to picking a song, it's
impossible to satisfy everybody. Letting
each and one of us pick our own song, will
take away the specific part and it'll just be total chaos. If some are not satisfied with the idea, don't enter.
One thing about the judges, though...
It would be cool to have a professional artist to do it. An artist that has been working in the field for some time and knows if the picture would have worked as an illustration or not and why. Fred or craig.M
Would have been perfect for this, but i doubt they have time....

Micke,
I was going to have Don Seegmiller judge it. He teaches illustration at Bingham Young and is also the art director for Saffire (a gaming company.) He had offered his services before.

Sounds great to me, like others said why bitching when InDepth spend time thinking about a nice contest project (and it has been already discussed a long time in another thread and mainly the song idea was accepted by most of us) , he also gets prices for the winner, i think its fair ...
And for the judjing with all i have heard and seen from Don i think he is "pro" enough
Sounds good to me but i still dont know if i will be able to do the thing since i"m going home for holidays and wont have my computer again until 4th january , but if i dotn have too much work to do for school after the 4th i will participate
Good job InDepth and thanks for setting up that for us |
