Everyone here is super busy finishing Myst 3, but I managed to find a few hours to do something fun. Here's a simple little character I threw together. It's name is Leeek and it's a,... a something. In the dark, his skin turns blue and his eyes light up to show him the way. In the light, his skin turns white and the eyes go dark. Here's the sketch.
Here's the 3D model
and here's the surface
Hope you like it.

That model is awesome man! I can just imagine a horde of them running around wreaking havoc, like Smurfs Gone Bad (but a little taller, without the clothes, and with glowing eyes, and...ah screw it!)...
Quick question, based on the wireframe version of that model, why does the rendered version look so hazy and smooth, not angular like the model in the bottom pic...? |

synj,
Thanks!! Big big compliment coming from you. Working on the huge, heavy, super complex stuff in Myst has givin me an appreciation for keeping things simple. Love your characters and animation. You have a knack for making people feel good. What a wonderful talent. Guess you could say this character is kind of a little homage to you. Gotta get you down to San Diego so you can meet Fred, Waco, Francis and the rest of the Presto gang. Everyone here is a big, big fan . I'm definatly lookin forward to playin with Leeet in the future. Just gotta find the time.
Skorpian,
Smurfs gone bad, Hahhaha. The reason the model is smooth is because it's a sub-division surface (Max Meshsmooth NURMs). Basically, the renderer sub-divides the surfuce for me so the model is smooth. Like this
The haziness is just a soft, blury anti-alias setting.
Jenn,
Thanks, so are you, or so I've heard. I'll have him moving as so as I get this 500 pound gorilla called Myst off my back.

it looks great! kudos to you. can't wait to see what you do with it! it brings a series of novels to mind, if you've ever heard of Xanth, by Piers Anthony, it's looks like something he would dream up. =]

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Nightmare Before Christmas Rules. Vincent is pretty cool too.

I've never read anything by Piers Anthony but it sounds interesting. Xanth eh, I'll go look it up on Amazon.

Sweet!
I like the style of that little guy Leeek.
Just wondering.. Is it going to be used in a game or do you make models for the heck of it?

natec,
Blah, blah, blah. You and you car models. I already showed you I could build an 81 Ford Fairmont. What more do you want.
DRX,
I just did this one for fun. I am going to animate him as soon as a few of my heavy duty deadlines at work disappear. Only spent about 2 hours on it so it's not the most complex character, but that was my goal. Keep it simple.

great stuff.

Are you gonna make that little dude drive the Fairmont. I'll bet you that he could outrun any M Coupe. I mean how fast can a shoe go?

Anticz,
That character is tight, it's kinda like a Tim Burton creation or something like that. Someone once told me the best characters come from the back of the brain. I think he was right. Characters that look like ordinary people or so are boring and not amusing to watch. Not the case with your little guy, HE ROCKS. You should but him in a superhero pose and have him as your sidekick .
Good work anticz.
