Ive heard Micke talk about this some, but not in detail, can anyone give me some explination of what exactly is Negative & Positive space? Mabye some examples would be helpfull aswell

And drawing from negatives mabye? thanks!

Hmm, i too have heard these expressions, i believe they are definitions of the space an object takes up, negative space is empty, or flat, positive is wholesome and 3d i guess, i dunno, thats just wut i thought, think of the difference between a square and a cube.

yes, negitive space is emptyness, it is nessasary to balance negitive space and postive space togehter. (think ying and yang, they are opposites, yet they make a whole)
i hope that helps a little....i dont really have any examples

Like the negative space is the space around your objects/etc and the positive space is your objects/etc. So is just your composition really..

positive space is the space occupied by your subject.

the negative space is the space 'not occupied' by your subject, or the space that defines the form of the subject. it's determined by the positive space and your border. Like say you had a woman standing, with her hip cocked to one side and her hand on her hip.

The space between her bent arm and her body is negative space. The space that her hip is cocking away from is negative space.. from what I've learned, it's like taking a silhouette of your subject. It has alot to do with determing good and bad composition.

I haven't explained it that well, but I hope it helps.

Hey burnOut,

Now that you understand what negative space is, you might wanna try giving yourself a little negative space assignment. Recognizing the negative space in your composition can really help you out in terms of design and placement.

Take something like a crazy plant and set it in front of you, then draw all the space in between the leaves without letting any lines slip into them. It's a really helpful exercise is helping you to draw what you see rather than what you think is there

One thing to remember about negative space is that, as well as being "the bit that isn't anything else," it's also an extremely useful tool in and of itself. By malipulating the amount and location of negative space, you can completely alter the look and feel of a picture. You'd be surprised how much difference moving around your nothingness can make.

By way of example, people often comment on the negative space in this (now almost two year old) picture of Loki. It was a lot less interesing before I pushed him over to the right.

Just something else that no one has pointed out... if you have a background, that doesn't necessarily mean you don't have negative space. If you have a picture of a man standing up against the house, then there will be negative space around the man... But by that same token, if you can see mountains in the distance, then the space around the border of the house will be negative space, and by comparison, the house will be positive space.

I guess this kind of confuses the situation a bit, but it just sounded like everyone was implying that "negative space = white paper" or something.

Put simply (and probably incorrectly), positive space is where stuff is going on. Negative space is where stuff isn't going on. I have to admit that I don't really think about it.
