There was a post a while ago about drawing anime books... only thing I remember is that they were incredibly expensive... about 50 bucks or somemthing.
They often have them at you local comic store.

You know I've been trying anime recently, it's probably not the best idea to buy a 50 dollar book, I've been using the various internet resources, if you're very new to drawing I recommend getting drawing on the right side of the brain by betty edwards, I REALLY recommend this book, it will help you in whatever style you plan on working with.
Good luck

Man, don't waste your money on HOW TO DRAW crap books. Seriosly, the only good books are anatomy, lighting and junk books. There is no one way to draw anime...heck, anime was derived pretty much from old disney style cartoons.
Surf the web...that's your best bet. |

I would not suggest startign with anime. It is not very marketable illustation look unless you want to work in that field or on pokemon games...anyways look to people like vortex and micke they have a good marketable style for illustration..best thing to do is to draw form life and find your own style... do you remember one famous artist out there who did not have there own style?...
but if you are dead set on doing that style then here are some good books that I own done by great japanese manga artists
ISBN: 4-88996-045-7 it is called how to draw anime that number is for book # 3 so you will have to find the other ones...good luck
PS: The dark side is always easier and more seductive....

Anime wasn't derived from old disney cartoons, what are you talking about? If you wanna do research on anime and why its drawn the way its drawn, you should do some research on japanese culture. They draw that way (and have always drawn that way) for a reason. Personally, I would recommend trying to develop your own style instead of trying to mimic another style. I'm not trying to bash you, just help you.
I've seen it happen so many times in my drawing classes here at SCAD. So many people try (unsuccessfully) to draw anime-style and get bashed by the teachers. No one can draw anime like the people who were born/raised over there can. Alot of people try, but no one comes close. |

Hey eddie superbug is right the classic look of anime was derived when some the the old school anime artists from like the 30-40's started drawing there own disneyesque style characters..you can really see the influence is old animations like rocket boy and the like. |

Good luck, there are 6432969438906432890684396064320864389364 number of people who is good at drawing anime and they look EXACTLY like each other. People won't be impressed if they see a portfolio that is full of anime style.

<-- New guy on the forum
1. It's not "Chinese toons". It's Japanese toons. That's a big difference. At least to me..
2. There are several "styles" of manga. For example, the almost "real" looking characters in Akira and the more common "childish" looking characters as in Sailer Moon. Decide which style you want to draw frist.
3. Don't buy books I mean, why should you when you could get it for free on the net?
Save som pics to your harddrive and try to "copy" them. I know it sounds kinda lame but it's actually a pretty good way to learn. After a while you'll probably learn the umm.. basics.
Then you could go on and try to create your own characters
Good luck
For those of you who didn't know:
Anime is the animations, the "cartoons"
Manga is the comics

Just sort of echoing what everyone else is saying here... But most important than learning how to draw in a specific style is learning how to DRAW. Once you learn the basic proportions of a human and how to set them down in an aestheticly pleasing piece, you can very easily learn to draw people in any style you want, whether it's manga, or american-style cartoons, or oil paints, or 3D. The basic understanding of the human figure is what's most important, not the style.
As far as books are concerned, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" IS a very good book, and I highly recommend it as well. But it's no substitute for some art classes. |

hate to disappoint you, but manga was indeed influenced by early disney works.
do a search for the history of anime/manga, and you'll find out the story. |

eddie: yeah.. ermm.. the guy who did kimba the white lion, widely sort of.. accepted(?) as the first toon in the anime / manga style was basically trying to draw stuff that looked like disney's stuff.. he really admired the designs he saw, and wanted to emulate them, but still keep it his own style.. and it developed from there...
and i agree with everyone who's said this.. dont buy a book.. get the pics for free on the net. there are quite a few really good sites out there with tutorials on how to draw popular characters, and they're always a good place to start.
btw. i could be *totally* wrong about the kimba / disney thing.. thats just what i read in a book about the style.. not sure how reliable it is |
