[Flinthawk]

This here is something I decided to try out after seeing some more of Vortx's work and going home and actually finding some pastel paper I had laying around that looked very close to the kind of stuff he uses. I drew up this pose for a character I'm developing using marker and then going over it in black and white pencil before finally inking it. I didn't succeed in getting the Vortx look I was going for but I think that's because I over-inked this thing...something I need to work on. Also, his right leg might be confusing to people without seeing this thing with some color which I may do sometime soon. The hand axe knocking the sword down probably doesn't read right either...probably should've picked a better angle. Spooge said that he learns best when falling on his face and I've found that I learn lessons much the same way (quite literally sometimes...ouch). Well, if anybody has the time, tell me what ya think. Critiques are always welcome =)

cool pic, it is exactly the same technique that i am goin to try. It seems to enhance the image somehow. do more like this.

I like this picture. The pose seems right. Very dynamic. Although his left leg seems to be too big. Actually, his left lower leg seems to look like a right leg. Tough foreshortening angle. Nice picture.

That's a tough angle you have. I'm by no means a perspective expert, so I could be wrong as well.

wonderful handling of foreshortening! that is a very difficult thing to do!

the emotion is great as well! i dont quite understand why the sword and hand on the left are there, i perssonally could do without them, that figure says enough of what is going on.

Hey awsome pic i really like it and yes i thought the same thing bout his right leg (our left) its way to big and it maks him look as though he has a stump for a leg and maybe he lost his bow fighting and piced up some swords and didnt have time to through down the arrows, hehe just a thought great job keep it up and keep posting.

Hey, what everyone has been saying, its a great pic. With the angle of the axe, I think if you angle it to the picture's right side it would make more sense. Like as he hits the sword down the force is propeling the axe down and across his body a little bit.

Also, I might try adding stronger highlights. I saw a picture earlier today about someone trying to do a Vortx style and they used almost pure white highlights. I think it added a lot more depth to the picture. But then again, its just my opinion.

elam: thanks for the retry but I think you're missing something because of the way I drew the rear leg. You're redraw assumes that the ground is level with the eye since you're trying to keep both feet the same height. The original has the ground sloping towards the bottom of them page...hopefully some color will clarify what I was trying for. The bottom of the rear leg is actually the toe of his boot peeking out from underneath his knee, if that helps explain what that rear leg is doing back there...I know, it needs work =)

DarkTerrax: kinda hard to fight using two weapons with a bow strung to your back. I was thinking about putting the bow on the ground behind him along with some arrows stuck in the ground as if he was firing them at his enemies before they got to him and forced him to melee now (think like that scene in Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves where he shoots a few oncoming horsemen down before resorting to the sword)

Dryfire: I used some pastel paper I forgot I had. It's a pad of 30 sheets with about 5 or six different colors from sky blue to black. The paper's 40% cotton though so it soaks up any and all ink I put down on it.

Moose: thanks! Foreshortening always seems to pop up in my images but I think that's because I have a tendency to go for the dramatic/dynamic. At least it makes me think about what I'm drawing before I draw it. I put the sword there for mainly my own purposes as a reference and practice in drawing interaction between two characters. Good to know you got the message even without it though =)

Krazy: See my post to DarkTerrax, it explains what I was thinking at the time. Glad you liked the pic!

Delucubus: I see what you mean, that could work...I'll have to see what I can do now that it's in the computer. I saw the pictures you're talking about as well. I wanted to stay away from strong highlights though...I'm more into subtleties. Plus I usually like doing shadows and highlight through color rather than pencil. Thanks for the comments.
