Yep, I'm a real big fan of these series, and I just saw "End of Evangelion" which just blew me away with all it's glory. Things to say about this image? Humm, I spent a big deal of hours on this one, lost count, basically I started it out a month ago, then was really busy (and lazy) with school, and I picked it back up now since it's the exam period (aka RELAX! hehe). This is a (or meant to be) a perfect ocular reproduction of a toy Evangelion action figure I have on my desk (ie: drawing from life, not photo ref). I just got a ram upgrade and tried to push it to the max, so the full rez pic I'm posting here is really 2x bigger even. I didn't put much work onto the background. I should have, this is one aspect of my artistic technical library that is lacking. This time I got the EVA proportions right, for all you other die-hard anime fans who were really picky about this detail on my previous pic

Critics and comments are very welcome. This pic ought to raise the message board standards a few inches!

Full-rez pic here.. ~330kb

(hrmm, this JPG really has SHITTY artifacts (on the gun!) in Netscape 4.7 !! You don't see those in IE or ACDSee or Photoshop)

Wow, I'm impressed. At first I thought it was a 3d model, but noooo....

The only thing i see right off the bat:

Look at the way his right foot is pointing. The detail on the knee above it doesn't line up with the centerline of the foot and shin section. But then again, I don't know anything about the robots and it could be totally accurate.

Anyway, really nice, Snake Grunger! Much better than the last post....

Schup SG.. I thought it was just a photo of a toy for a second there Reaaalll nice work. I'm not too familiar with the evangelion robot suit thingys but should there be some kind of articulated joint at the elbow area? Also the back leg (behind the gun) seems a little flat, maybe a shadow or specular will bring it out more.

" This pic ought to raise the message board standards a few inches! "

And by that you're referring to his gigantic codpiece? Right, you cocky bastard

That looks pretty cool, Francis.
Just one question though. Did you try to
just draw the action figure? I don't get the sense of scale, it looks tiny to me. If you had changed the perspective so that the robot is seen from below i think it could
help, but i guess it's too late for that
Another suggestion is to add some battle scars and weathering and a proper background.
It looks much better than the last one

Above is a example of some photos i took off my Boba Fett model(i plan making a painting), wich is about the same size as the Evangelion Action-figure.
The first one is just taken without any
particular angle and lightsetting.I've played around with angles and perspective and more dramatic lightnings on the two others and it makes it appear bigger than it really is.
If you've seen some of the painted Gundam
illustrations they are done in a simillar
way, they look huge. They have got rid of the plastic-look too and played around with the materials of the robot, poses and angles.
Hope this can help.

Frost -

Get-up Kid - Actually, the toy is really like that, to give the toy a "living" feel rather than a "robot with restricted motion and articulation".

Napalm - Yeah well the reason it doesn't seem to have an articulate elbow is because the actual action figure is like that. I didn't use mister "good old imagination" to figure a way to make the elbow look more natural. I meant "raise the message board standards" by "showing them fu**ing lamers how to fu**ing draw."

Micke - Thanks for the tips, you really succeded in making that Bobba look 6 feet tall I ordered a new toy (tee-hee!) and will try and draw it with a huge perspective (ie: robot's tall like a skyscraper) and try to use more imagination as in creating an actual scene of something going on intead of action figure just laying on the desk, holding a gun without knowing why.

Dives - Thanks

snake, that s really cool stuff , i also in a first look thought you were presenting a modeled mecha rendered with radiosity.., very nice rendering

c'est bien 'the end of evangelion" ? j ai entendu dire que c'etait assez decevant et qu i valait mieux rester sur la fin classique

Here are some digital pictures I took that would have been more interesting to work with:

Hehehe, you can see my Wacom Intuos box on the top of the shelf

toast!

For those who don't speak french, well I basically say that people won't like End of Eva because they think that if it's not a Disney movie ending, where everything is joyful and happy, then it's a bad ending. End of Eva is a brilliant movie in alot of ways. Those who don't think it's brilliant, well they need a IQ boost. Sorry. hehe

Looks nice and very clean Snake G, but a bit like a miniature, like people have stated before, sorry Much because that you have shaded the materials on the robot like they are on the toy I guess. I agree that the other photoref. you have are better. If you would use one of those and still try to do some innovative stuff with the background and shading and colors on the robot, I think you can get a much more "massive" look.

toast!

Joachim - I don't like the sound of "Snake G", sounds too much like, "G fresh" hehe.. You mean, innovate the shading, as in, make the surfaces look massive metal instead of fragile plastic? I think I could add some fighter helicopters that are surrounding the robot, yeah..

It's nice to see that my art is appreciated and it really gives me confidence that others agree that I am getting better. I like the feeling.

Nice job, Snakey! (better than Snake G?) You did a really awesome job of making it look like a toy eva, which, considering what you were basing the image off of, is a good thing.
