Having seen all the neat portraits that some people here have posted of themselves... I had a sudden urge to make one of me. Little me.
Now. I had no really good images to completely base the picture on, I'm afraid. Only some small crappy ones where you could only get the basics of the face, which is really what I wanted
And no pictures of my new hairstyle either Which was a bit harder to draw than the rest, really. I think it has a decent likeness at least...

Man, forgot to add - there's a reason to why the hair at the back of my head looks reddish while the rest isn't the same colour at all.
It's dyed that way. *sheepish*

Very nice! The only thing I can find to crit is that the eyebrow piercing looks really flat and 2-D compared the the rest of the pic. But the rest is just incredible! |

Wow! This is some great work. As always I always love the way you render hair, and that's a really cool eyebrow ring. (and don't worry about the hair )
Too bad there aren't more women (like us) on the forum. *sigh* Males seem to have dominated everything in this field. Oh well... the time will come

*drool* ....... nice picture ..... hehe anyway really like the way the hair was done. Think you can get rid of that portion of the shoulder for a more 3d look. Just don't define it as the eyes will do it themselves. |

Thanks everyone.
Hm... Maybe I will remove the shoulder... Don't know why I put it there to begin with. Probably my brain short-circuiting from lack of sleep.
As to how long it's taken me... well... by far longer than my usual pictures, that's for sure. Thing is that I started this one long ago, and gave up on it, and then I gave it another shot now that I saw all the portraits here. I really can't say for sure.
*sighs*... man, I'm really starting to HATE that eyebrow piece... damn piece of jewellery... perhaps someone can help me out with it?

wow, that is very nice.
i love the left shoulder. i wish the right one (back shoulder). the close shoulder is beautiful though. i love how it is very impresionistic there, and how it is defined by light instead of line. very nice.
i think it would also be just as sucessful even if there were no indications of shoulders. I also think it would make it more sensual piece. i really love drawing people who wear clothes, but no to draw/paint the clothes, and just the flesh. Not only does this let the viewier make the rest of the drawing with their head, it looks neat too.

Periadam, I agree with you, I think the lack of females in this industry is depressing. What do you think it is that keeps women from choosing digital art as a career?
Enayla, very nice picture, I really love the way you render hair, and the pic you did of the girl and the mask was amazing, especially when you said you did it in 3 hours. I think you should get rid of the shoulder, or at least make it just a hint of a line. What's your education background?
btw, I agree with Sedul.

very nice indeed, too bad you're too old for me.. and you got a boyfriend.. and so and so, hehe, anyway, the top of the head looks weird (atleast to me), i guess its the skin/scalp, i just want a little more hair inbetween there i guess
i enjoyed your other rendition at elfwood, hmm, too bad for the copyright stuff in the middle of the picture, but i guess *sigh* its necessary.. kinda takes away from the pic, but i enjoyed them nonetheless ;D

I dunno that anything is really keping women from art. The way I see it, if women (or men) want to have art as a carreer they need to get off their ass and do something about it.
But, back top the matter at hand, great pic. I do think you could fade off that should a bit though. Also the neckline of your shirt/jacket blends into your neck towards the back. You may want to define that a little more.
The shine on the flesh and the jacket is the same I noticed. Now, being that the flesh and cloth are two doifferent colors and materials, the highlites will be different shades. The jackets wont be quite as yellow depending on the light source, they will be more white.
Hope that helps, I really like the portrait.
Your quite pretty.

Looks pretty good. I would remove the shoulder on the left side of the picture and shorten the shoulder on the right side. Not sure what to tell you about the eyebrow thingamabob. |

Everything looks proper to me. Maybe just get rid of the eyebrow ring (I don't fancy that stuff anyway, but that's just me ).
I did not notice the part/scalp that the person above mentioned and wrote it off as a piece of hair, but after going back and actually studying it more, if that was meant to be a part/scalp I think you could tone it down a tad and leave it less defined.
I'm not an artist of your calibre though, so ignore me at will.
You really are a feast for the eyes maybe with the next self-portrait you could just artistically render in your own new hairstyle. That would be a challenge from me to you

I am a computer art major in school, and there are a good number of female digital artists in the program. i think that one thing that exists is that not many of them are vocal. none the less it would be nice if there were a lot more.
my digital imaging prof (Dena Eber) is female, and is also the head of the Art Gallery this year at SIGGRAPH 2001 in Los Angeles, CA.
i personally dont like to look at things in a gender specific way. it doesnt really matter to me. it only bothers me when there is gender discrimination but i hardly think that there is much of that in art.

Wow, that's a lot of comments...
As for the shoulder, I'm beginning to realise more and more that it'll look much better once it's removed. Will do as soon as I get back from work today. Too tired right now (just got out of bed)
And I can see that the parting in the hair looks a bit crappy now. One of those things you don't think about while working on a picture, but then immediately notices as soon as somoene points it out - so thanks people!
Where it comes to the lack of women in digital art... I have my own theory. There's just a whole lot more guys working with computers overall. Not so strange that the number of guys doing art on computer would be greater than the number of women. Unfortunately. I think it might change in the future though since that "segregation" is lessening due to the fact that more young girls get in contact with computers today, than when I was growing up (at least in Sweden). Ah well, maybe I'm wrong.
Don't have much of an educational background, not in art at least. After finishing highschool, I studied something called "konst och form", which is basically "art and form" for three years. Which means I studied all the usual subjects in Sweden (history, math, English, Swedish... the rest) but a little bit more art than is usual. I didn't learn squat about art during those three years. I guess I was a bit too anti-everything at the time After finishing that, I went on to studying to become a teacher in English and Swedish... so... guess I'm mostly self taught.
Hm... what else was I supposed to answer here... yeah, how do I do a picture like this? Ah...eh... *thinks* I don't know. I start with a simple sketch, I doodle, and then the rest is just one long flow of colours and shapes... I'll try to do a tutorial about faces and hair some day
Nope... gotta run off to work now... *waves* Thanks SO much for all the nice and useful comments!

*sneaks in from work*
Blitz: *blush* Now you're making me embarrassed!
And I'll be looking forward to the mail
Edit: And another thing... that IS my new hairstyle. What I meant to say was that it was damn hard to draw when I didn't have a picture of it... and when my hair is usually rather uncombed and messy when I'm just home working on pictures

i hope you dont mind, but as far as the eyebrow thing goes, i did a little touch up. to make it a bit more 3d i distinguished the texture as a little more metallic. and i put little creases in the skin to show that it is interacting with the bar more. if i had a higher res image i might be able to show you better, but i hope ya get the gist of what i mean.

You're an angel SporQ! That helps a lot! I'll give it a shot when I get back from work
As far as the creases, though, the skin /doesn't/ crease around the piercing. You can't even see the hole it goes in through since the jewellery is so well worked out... but I'll see what I can do.

yeah, i was just assuming there was a crease. hard to say what to do without actually seeing it
maybe a little bevel or something, i dont know. also, try and throw a bit of shadow from the bar onto the skin...

Wow I was wondering what exacly that looked like on your eye.
That is cool.. I have never seen something like that and I have alot of friends with piercings. It is just 2 spikes sticking out.
I didn't mean to make you blush..
It must be a real confedence booster to not only get great replies on your art work but you as well..
What time is it where you are....just curious I always get a kick out of that. It is probably sunny...me, 2:38am late night
Well see ya again

SporQ: Thanks again. *bright smile* As I said, I'll give it a try when I get back home, and then I'll pester you until you tell me whether I got it right or not ;D
Blitz: It is, yes... Always nice to hear (as I pointed out before) that people don't find me completely ugly .. I haven't got that much of a self-confidence problem though
As to what time it is... well... says 11.41 AM here on my computer... and I guess that's right. Don't think the sun is shining outside, since it's pretty gloomy and drab up here this time of the year - not snowing right now though, even if I think it should.
Ugh... my leg hurts. My cat attacked it this morning
edit: Forgot to mention... thanks, I'm kind of in love with my piercing *laugh*... It's pretty unusual, I don't think I've ever met anyone else with anything similar. But I guess there would be some others like me out there, completely weird

The jewelry in the piercing is a bit unusual, but I HAVE seen that sort before. Or did you mean the eyebrow piercing itself? I see those like daily.
Oh yeah, and it is a very nice picture.
