Hello all.

I've been lurking around here for around 2 months now, ever since Micke and Joachim showed me that it's ACTUALLY POSSIBLE TO PAINT IN A 2D PROGRAM!!
Old stuff for you guys of course but I never thought that was possible...until they showed me what Spooge demon could do
And after introducing this forum to me I've been quite interested in CG-painting.

So I finally started on my own and this is my first ever PS result.

I'm actually more of a 3D artist and I've only used PS for texture creation (usually with a photo as base).

This lil' fella (around 40cm) started out as a sketch for a model I'm working on in 3D. Then I thought it would be a nice practice at coloring. It's taken me very long; around 40h, maybe more, I didn't check the time and often played Counterstrike in between

[edit] Oops forgot this.

Here is the linedrawing. Originally drawn at 1024x768 and blown up to 3424x4096 which is the format of the original.

Please rip it apart! Although I'm still more into 3D and won't post pics too often I would like to improve my 2D skills.

Thanks for looking!

Yeah, Spooge is an inspiration for alot of us here on sijun. I can say it's because I saw his website that I bought a wacom tablet and started practicing.

You seem to master shape and light, which is really great. I have seen your website before, and I'd like to see the finished texture on that big robot you're doing.

Haha! Excellent.

I would like to see the fingers with more pointy edges as everything else on the robot does. Also there's a minor symmetry problem with the legs, where they connect to the hip.

Great to hear you could put such amount of time into this. Continue making these, and the required time will soon halve.

Nice work, very sweet looking character.. Tho I think the bigger bots would pick on him. Which isnt very good. Maybe you can make him a bigger suit

I like him lots tho. Colors are very well done.

I hope to see more of your art around

I love the position and the head and the feets it's like the best features. You should try to make him in 3D now.

Wow Wiro, great concept and picture! I really like it. But you wanted criticism so I'll gladly comply. <grin>
His (i'm assuming it's male, or maybe i should say its), left forarm and hand lack the metallic quality the rest of his body has, that's what initially caught my eye. And the fact that the lightsource is coming from the upper left of the page but doesn't seem to be directly on top of him, so there should be a shadow of his body in addition to the shadow of his feet.

I can see some definate Episode 1 influences in the design of the joints and body, but all together it has a life of it's own. Looks like he'll be a fun character to animate too.

As for Snake Grunger's comment about Craig Mullin's work being a reason why he went out and bought a wacom is some what ironic. Craig hates using tablets and does all his work using a mouse. Yes, you heard me, a mouse.

Haha, thank you all, I'm sitting here with a big grin on my face! Someone should slap me.

Snake:
Thanks. I'm still working on that other robot. Damn, I have too many half-finished models

Gecko:
I'll definatly change to more edged fingers and hands in the 3D model, thanks. Actually I'm really bad with hands so much of the 40h went to that...

Joachim:
Yeah, PS is just so cool!

Jenn:
I'm also working on a big robot in 3D to kick anyone's ass if they pick on him

Wayco:
True, I think the hands don't quite fit anyway. In one version I did shade his legs more but it kind of hid away everything. I'm still teaching myself shading though.

CyberArtist:
Yeah, pitdroids, eh?
I was inspired by them to make a tiny robot but when it came to the form I though more of a french fry
But definatly Star Wars too.

But you're joking about Craig right?? I've definatly read that he uses a tablet when painting outside with his laptop.
If not he's an arse because it makes him inhuman

Thanks again all! I think I'll stop grinning now.

working in Photoshop Since you allready can draw photoshop will not be a problem to get used to. Yeah, i can see some pit droid influences in there.
Would love to see more stuff like this!

Neverhood! Yay claymation. That's something I've always wanted to try and mimic using 3d computer software, and so far the only way to get it completely seems to be by using radiosity or a global illumination renderer since the look of claymation relies so heavily on the fact that it's real lighting and not computer lighting.

In an old forum topic Craig himself said that he'd tried using tablets before, but they never felt right to him, and at the time he'd already gotten used to using a mouse, so that's what he uses. If you look at Craig's work you'll notice that all brush strokes are single opacity, single width along the entire length of the stroke.

I myself have a Wacom, but still tend to go back to my mouse. I'm just more comfortable with it still.

http://www.cyberartist.org/etc/ben-progress-3.jpg
http://cyberartist.org/img/oldman.jpg

These three are all-mouse works that I've done, and I know some other artists on this forum are mouse-only as well (or were at one time) and did some increadable work.

Looking forward to meeting you and Joachim, Micke!

Thanks a much, Icannon. Well, I use lots of lights. Bouncelights, rimlights, fillights, kickers, all the bells and whistles with varying degrees of success. Lately I've tried to paint more with light as they say. All those new shiny global illumination renderers sound exiciting too. Time consuming but cool.

Frost, not half the god of what the other norwegians are
Not an Innerlooper (yet?)
