I don't really think that the song idea would work. at least not if it were made on a specific song. It isn't a bad idea, but people aren't going to want to do a pic on a song that they hate, and it's inevitable that not everyone's going to like whatever song would be chosen for such a thing. So it'd probably have to be made more general to let everyone who wants to do it comfortable with doing it.
I think those 'great moments in history' and 'prehistory' ideas were really good though.

Ye ye ye.. also the topic shouldn't be on one object like "draw a ball" because even with many different ballls we will see, it still would be very dull :o
But song idea is good.. something like "draw a scene from your favorite song by any artist"
Imagine how many interesting images can be created?
I would draw Jamiroquai eheheh no no.. Fettes Brot! Or Freddie Mercury? BOY GEORGE!!

Ok, i know it does'nt sound as flashy as
The post apocalyptic contest on 3d palette.. But since everybody is here to improve
their skills as artists and illustrators
This could actually turn into a really good and fun excersise. Train to be a illustrator
and do your best no matter how little you like the idea. i think flexibility could be a key word here. To me atleast this is a great challenge. Even a bigger challenge than doing a naked chick with 3 heads holding two swords in Gigerstyle cobined with anime :
Peridam:
If you were a illustrator and a customer came to you with an assignment to do a illustration or picture based on lyrics from a song, would you turn it down because you don't like the song?

What do you think the timeframe should be? Also, any special rules or considerations you think should be made? |

I like the song idea but would definitely prefer hearing the actual song than just reading the lyrics. Maybe do a song by an artist that posts MP3s of their music online?
I think "nothing" would also be an intersting topic, as long as people take it seriously.

I dont know if i will have the time to try on this contest, im a beginner in digital painting, but i thing the song idea is really good. Like Micke said if we like the subject doesnt matter as long as the customer like it ...
In the art school i am this year we have a lesson every 2 weeks especially based on this idea, the teacher is giving us some weird assignement and we have to work in 2 times, first we have to think a lot, draw lot of sketches and explain to him why we want to do this and how we are interpreting the subject and showing it in our realisation and after a good brainstorming we eventually make the project. And in fact at the end , the research we made on the thing, the way we interpreted the assignment and how we can explain why we did what we did count more in the final mark than the beauty of the realisation itself.
You can do the best looking illustration ever made, if the customer cant see in it what he asked you he wont buy it, but if you make something maybe less polished, less perfect technically-wise, but saying what the customer wanted it to say, it will work.
sorry if it isnt completely clera, some of these words were hard to find for me (french)
and sorry for my long rambling
but i think the song idea is great, and i will try to participate if i find time |

Song idea is neat... but I'd say take a section of it, so that you're not being too broad.
Another idea might be to take an element, post it online, and let everyone go from there... so instead of working towards an outcome, (like say, 'draw a ball!'), you're working away from it, (here's where you start... go!)

Hmm how bout who has the most radical and new style of painting, mayeb it could be judged by everyone or sumthin on a poll. Maybe using colors instead of lights/darks to show depth and texture?

I like the song idea as well, indepth. it is an artistic interpretation of someone else's art, and i feel that using music as inspiration to make something creative is a wonderful thing.
im all for the song idea, but i think an audio version as well as the lyrics would be beneficial mainly because it could be a song about 2 lovers who stroll softly across a beach as seaguls fly and dolphins splash in the water, only the music is played by Cannibal Corpse. The aural sounds are as inspirational as the words from the color and tone of the music.
song idea, it be gooood!

Micke is right - we have to be confronted with sth totally unexpected. In my illo class we always get the most boring topics to start a storyboard or illo from like family in the living room, banana ad-spot, humans and water, guyenteringpetshopbuyingpetandleave and all those crazy everyday soap things used in advertisements and stuff. - So such a topic would be a real challenge.
I also like the song- and the Giger idea - but I'd prefer a more classical song sth of Hans Zimmer (Gladiator) or Christopher Franke (Babylon 5).

song thing is nice. finally it starts to sound like a competition I would like to be a part of I def. like that it has to be a theme of some sort, and preferably something you can add some expression and feelings to but still a topic that isn't too abstract for people to make a bit similar thoughts from (though, that might be hard cosidering what was cooked up under a topic "showdown" , which was rather clear in my opinion )....so hopefully, no barbarians fighting, future-action blurgh or babes showing their tits through a wet t-shirt, hehe.
isn't napster allowed to be used now (?), so as long as the song is to be found there, there's no prob.

There's a post I made here a long time ago that seemed to relate to this. I made a list of suggestions for some kinda drawing thing... some you guys have already listed, some your aren't interested in doing but anyways... here's the list
*************************
* a cyborg
* interpretation of a song
* "fairy tale"
* neo tokyo scene
* design a new insect
* underwater scene
* a non-human civilization
* interpretation of the word "morph"
*************************
I have to agree with Justin that I would much rather hear a song that just read the lyrics. Although lyrics can be moving, I usually find the rhythm of a song to be the real emotional part for me. There is this really great song called Escape by Craig Armstrong... I have the MP3 available on my server. It's also only about 1 minute long or so. I find it to be really emotional =)
http://div.dyndns.org/beth/Craig%20Armstrong-%20Escape.mp3
I think the morph idea could be neat as well... or maybe some other cool word?

My take: Post a one paragraph passage from a novel (any novel will do preferably something fantastic). Then make the objective to interpret that scene or passage into a visual. The visual can be a Book cover ( for those guys like Vebjorn who rock at that stuff), Matte painting (Spooge etc.) , Comic page (Flexible Elf), 3d image/level (With low poly characters for a game), Graphic Design, Or animation (Synj) Whomever gets the most votes for the piece wins. Almost like a satanic Oprah's Book Club:-)
Regards
Ps. Maybe look to Verne or Wells as a start?

I think we will start with the song idea... then if I can drum up some more prizes we can try new ideas. I will create a new thread with the rules, the lyrics, and a link to a 30 second clip of the song. Look for it in the next hour or so.

How about something as simple as a "feeling" or a sentence. Then the picture could be whatever it means to any particular artist
"I don't wanna sound like a queer 'er nuthin'. But I think unicorns kick ass!"
^^From a neat movie. ANnnnnnyways.. cool idea, yes no? Sorry if it was posted before but I just scanned and may have missed a similar post.

I think that that song would produce some very interesting and emotional results... if taken seriously. What does everyone think? I also like Frianchetto's idea but maybe we could save that for a second contest.
Please let me know what you think and if there is general approval I will post the lyrics and rules this evening.

1. it might be interesting to do something classical like a still life, or a nude, something like a mother holding a child (thought that may offer too much fotter for the pervs of the forum).
2. as for a exert from a book it might be cool to do something well known but off the beaten track (i.e. not sci-fi or fantasy) such as "The Catcher in The Rye," "The Tale of Two Cities" or maybe even a kids book such as a "Super Fudge" or "Ramona Quimby" or maybe even "Willy Wonka"
3. a natural history scene, something interpretive but based on nature. a dinosaur scene but biologically and historically accurate. or maybe an early human scene. maybe a great moment in human history, discovery of fire, the wheel. or more modern like spooge's Columbus peice. maybe a great moment in earth's history, the extinction of the dinosaurs, the first land animal....
5. i like the music idea but i think we should again push it a bit. that blues song sounds great. something sad sounds good. the farthest i might go in the direction of whimsical would be "The Devil Down in Georgia" (?). but i like the music idea. my only concern is that i think it might be more interesting if people had access to the actual song.

Sounds like a good idea, though alot of people may get put off by the artist (if theyre not a skynard fan etc). I think it would be really important to get the actuall lyrics up.
Im certian both of those musicians wouldn't be my first choice, but you have me intriged and I'm seriously open minded to this idea.
Another option would be to use a song no one likes, to see how far the creative tendencies run. (Dare I mention the spice girls?) Just an idea here, I don't own any of their CDs !!!!! |

Hey why not have a poem that can be interpeted many different ways and see how each artist interpit's it and depicts it. Just my 2 cents |
