Here's a picture i started on yesterday.
It's done in ink and coloured in Photoshop.
I had this stupid song in my head while i did it so i guess it affected the drawing in some way...
Any comments or crits would be nice

great work as always
i can't really comment on the anatomy of gigantic pimply booger creatures, although i definetly do not want to meet one in the near future if they look anything like that
only thing that bothered me was the shadow underneath the creature's tongue. the light seems to come from over the kid's right shoulder ( based on his shadow ) so wouldn't the shadow underneath the tongue curve in a bit more? maybe not, ignore me.
anyways, good picture.... poor kid.

Odd picture idea... makes me pause, cause I know based on the setup here, I'm supposed to laugh.
Maybe the monster should be able to read the sign just as well as we, the viewers can.
Also, if I were drawing a mutant meatball with teeth... I'd add more alien facial features than these. The eyes could be tinier or the mouth could have less human features. If you've plated Oddworld, Abe's Oddysey or Abe's Exodus... refer to their messing with anatomy to see what I mean.
Oh, and put something simple in the backgruond to show where he is and maybe hint at who put him there with the sign. "Kick me" and "Eat me" signs are social pranks, so they make me look for the guy or group who did it. |

Micke
The lightsource seems to be coming directly from above, but you have a cast shadow off the kid that would put the light behind us the viewers. My only crit!!!!
And what the hell song were you listening to, you must be fun at parties

Heh, hilarious critter and cool style too. First I wasn't sure if the guy's right leg is up or on the ground. The shadows distracted me a little, but it's in the air alright.

Thanks for the replies..
Chapel, no porn music
Sergenth: I was thinking that the guy would
wonder around wondering where he was and where to go, so i think the critter allready would have seen it.
The monster would probably eat him even if it read the sign or not .
The inspiration for the monster came mostly from came from the strange creatures in "The yellow submarine" animated movie. Not
necessary a alien, but more a strange dreamlike-creature like a hallucination on a LSD trip or something. In many ways cute, but it has some features like the sharp teeth telling you that it's not nice. Shit like that really scares me..I was also thinking of weird fishes..
I think that adding more elements in the background to explain more would be a little too much. I like when the viewer can fantasise around it and maybe make up their own story behind it, but that's just my taste.
General confusion & Rhomb:
I totally agree 100% with the shadows! I'm looking into it right now. It sure is confusing. Thanks alot! I'll update it soon.
Meanwhile here's the lineart:

Hey thanks alot, Jenn
I don't want to start a new thread for this so i keep it in here.
I've recieved a lot of emails with question about how i i create my pictures so i've opened a small section with a couple of tutorials.
Please tell me what you think.
I'm not good at doing stuff like this so i would like to get your helpful opinions about it, how helpful they are or if i should explain more about a certain thing.
It's very rough at the moment and not too detailed.
Thank you.

hey micke thats some pretty crazy stuff man!!
I like it, it's alot different from the regular stuff you see on the forums.
Hey would you mind taking a look at my work in progress. I plan on spending lots of time on it...like maybe even a few weeks/a month?!
I'm trying out Craig Mullins method of painting...with sizing and blowing up areas --detailing. I'm sure you know!
I've decided to use my existing work *sleek hair woman* (dumb name i know)as an experiment...dunno, it's sort of caused me hassles already, because the size isn't 3000 by 3000 pixels to start with. And i'm guessing thats the idea of working big.
The master file is supposed to be large- like 3k by 3k, then the areas within it: i.e. the eyes can be blown up 3k by 3k in a seperate window, detailed then sized down.
Is it even worth doing all this for a portrait? Or is it more for backgrounds, battle scenes, multiple characters?
maybe i should ask spooge?

Hey anthony.
Thank you for the comment.
Sure i'll take a look at your work in progress, but where is it?
I'm not quite sure what you're asking but i could try to answer.
If the picture is'nt gonna be used for anything special its really no point in having a very high resolution on it. I usualy paint in 1000-2000 pixels cause i prefer having a fairly high resolution on it in order to have some kind of controll over it. If it is a magazine cover i paint in a much higher resolution, cause it's needed. It has nothing to do with what kind of picture it is.

Simple as that grid is, adding it has changed my whole questioning of the meaning of the piece to "Where the hell is he?"
"What the hell is that thing?" is a close second.
The absurdity of being in a TRON-like world now equals the irony of wearing an EAT ME sign for no reason and in the state of "about to be eaten by mutant-meatball."
It's not unbalanced like it was before. The BG really completed the story from where my mind started producing the story.
Ooh... have I discovered some new art psychology...
Makes me wonder if, when looking at art, we ask "where" before we ask "what." The same thing may happen when we wake up in unfamiliar surroundings... we don't ask "who am I" or "what am I" -- the more important questions are "who are you, where am I and where are my clothes?"
Also, the BG adds more dynamics to the guys blind stepping. |

Sorry Micke to hijack your thread
Anthony, got your email, sounds good to me. Maybe you could post it here, as you did such a good job of explaining it. Better than me.
You dont even need a separate document. Just rec marquee around the eye, float, right click, numeric transform, type in a few hundred percent enlargement(make it easy to scale back to original,so keep it a round number), it scales around the center of the selection. Now the important part. Make a new layer and paint your details on that. Once you are done throw away the original blown up layer. It has been resampled, and has lost edge info. Then scale back the layer with the painted detail. Provided that you have not moved anything, it will register perfectly.

hey spooge! I have a few questions
Should I be using an existing 1500x1500 pixel image ...blow it up to 3000x3000 then paint ? Or should I just start from *Scratch* 3kx3k then do all the resampling there?
Thanx for the advice about resampling with marquee...i don't know where the FLOAT command is though! so i'm sort of stumped as to how I can do it without-- copying then pasting into another layer. then saving as a PSD, opening up the original image JPG again, then slapping that into the PSD..
sort of a giant hassle. Cause I don't know where FLOAT is help please
Oh and when i scale the Detailed eye down to the original image, do i just use free transform to do so? cause its really hard physically lining it up...
whats the command to Size Down in Numeric Transform? Sorry but since i've never used Float or Numeric Tranform i'm unsure...
Oh...Micke, sorry for stepping on your toes here, i should take my questions into another msg area

Sergenth:I think the grid added a more surrealistic touch to it, wich i think is suits the pic fine.
Poxen: Here's my regular pens, but it could be done with the same result with a ballpoint pen or a pencil. I just had these lying around.
The release date is 8th of december.(it may be delayed a couple of days)
Kimzoll: Heheh, I take that as a compliment
Looking forward to the christmas-table in Copenhagen!
Dives:I'm not sure what you mean. It's suppose to come straight from above. Would you mind showing me what looks wrong cause i'm totally blind when it comes to trhe shadow at this point. I allready tried to fix the shadow. Would appreciate it
Synj:Glad you liked it.
I'm very inspired by your absurd worlds and strange creatures(almost like yellow submarine). So much of that probably sneaked in to the drawing too.

The creature reminds me of the Langoliers by Stephen King. I like this, the colouring and the style is cartoony and the different sized pupils on the creature are a nice touch making it look crazy. |

micke! Very nice humor in this. Great drawing as usual and the combination of hard edges with a little diffuse ones thrown in really marks your style. Really cool, like it alot!
