im trying to get better at drawing people from my imagination. i can draw from life or from a photo almost flawlessly, but fail to do so when drawing from my head.
i want to be able to think up a person in any position and any angle and be able to draw the person perfectly, but i'm still having trouble doing so; any suggestions? i've filled up several sketchbooks with work that i'm not satisfied with, and i'm about to throw the rest of my sketchbooks out the window.
at the school im currently attending, all we EVER do is draw from life. we do tons of still life pictures, or from models, but never from our heads. |

I am the same way. I've gotten better at drawing things from my head by practising. I'll first draw something I can see. Then I'll turn to a blank page and try to draw the same thing again, without looking. It kinda becomes part of your memory. Then after that I try to draw that same thing at different perspectives and eventually I can draw it whenever I need to. This takes a lot of time of course. Sometimes I get lucky and draw something that looks awesome right from my mind, but thats rare.
BTW, where do you go to school? I know an Eddie in Savannah that is originally from alabama.

I did the same thing at my schools. Now I work almost exclusively from my imagination. Until you draw from life until you can recreate form, anatomy, light, etc...without having to see it in front of you my only advice is to keep drawing from life.
and....try drawing more from your head in your own time. It isnt your schools responsibility to make you draw out of your head. Its yours.
