Jeesh I feel like an idiot for asking this, maybe cause I am, but thats besides the point. Anyway I keep seeing these awesome pics by Liquid and everyone else who does comic style and I'd like to start practicing it myself. Well, I've tried time and time again but I can't seem to figure out how to apply the colors without touching the black lines. I know I need to do it with layers, but whenever I do it never comes out clean. There is always a little bit of white still showing and I can't get around that. Its driving me insane.

If you are using photoshop, create a new layer about the black and white linework and set the mode to multiply. Then use that layer for coloring.

Or you could Trace the image on a new layer with the pen tool.

The way I use the most is this.

Go to the chanels pallet hold ctrl and click on the RGB or CMYK layer, this will make a sel of all the black. Then ctrl+alt+i to inverse the sel. Make a new layer and fill the sel on the new layer. That's 'bout it.

A while back, I had a few people ask me the same question, so I made up a quick tutorial on how to do this. This way is a bit more involved than the previous stated methods, but you can get some good control over your black line art with it. Plus you will learn to use tools that will prove valuable later on.

Capn: Should have just asked. That is exactly how I make my lineart layer.
