Hey Liquid! I was at M@d's site, and the were talking about you in the forums:

"Very good issue. IF I had to nitpick, I'd say the coloring wasn't really up to snuff. I don't blame Liquid, tho. They had a deadline to hit that was CRAZY. Maybe I was just spoiled getting a look at the pencils as well (I am a pencils whore). Still, the colors were better than 95% of the stuff in the market today..."

"I too thought the colors were different. I'm not a colorist though, they just seemed darker, more muted...but this too I liked. I think this was a definate'set-up' issue, and I cant wait for more!!"

"All in all, Battle Chasers #7 was awesome! My only complait was the colors. I realize the setting was night time, and this story had a darker feel to it, but I miss the bright colors in previous issues. Guess I will have to wait and see. But after waiting 18 months, I have no patience left! "

"first beef: color. the preview inks were outstanding for page 18 was it? why did liquid fade out them so much...it was the most detailed work in the issue...and going from reds to blues, doesn't cut it. probably teh worst colored issue yet. cept the butterfly that was puuuurty."

Just thought you'd like to know.

-------------------------------------------

Okay, you guys can bitch at me now for not posting this in Random Musings, but who goes there?

-------------------------------------------

Liquid! I still liked it, seems everybody likes your's and Aron's bright coloring style better. You guys still color better than any other colorists. Quite an inspiration.

I think we are going to end up scaring Liquid! off. He comes here to look at things other than his work and do different stuff and all he sees is posts asking him questions and posts with his published stuff. Give him a break guys. I feel bad asking him questions now.

That's simply absurd. I can't color for beans but I can still lecture you on color theory and your flats and your composition. I don't pencil any more but people still come to me and ask for advice. What does this forum exist for if you can't criticize others' art?!?

That said, while I'm sure Chris appreciates the information, I'm sure he's already seen it himself.

In addition to this (while not having colored a comic piece in my life) I think Liquid!'s colors did suffer somewhat on the recent issue and my guess would be that this was due to the fantastic time and effort they've been sinking into every page of Soul Saga. Their colors in places didn't look as near as professional and polished as they have in the past and I think some of their flats even distracted the reader from some of Joes more interesting elements. Having said this, I still think that they were the best damned folks for the job.

Furthermore, I feel as well that Tim's inks (while gorgeous overall) got slightly sloppy in places, but that's to be understood. Can't hold it against the lad.

Also I think I've seen Joe's pencils better in the past despite this stylistic shift he brought on.

So there you have it. A crit from somewhat who can't do what they do. This is what democracy, art and life are all about. Now go shove your closed little minds up your intolerant arses. And have a nice day.

Milkman: Chill.. read his post again. That is a quote from somebody else. There is no need to get offensive here on the forum.

A. Mount: I agree.

I think something everyone needs to take into consideration is deadlines. I'm sure Liquid! would have loved to spend more time on each thing they color, but I think deadlines get the better of them. Not to mention what are they coloring.. 4..5 books right now?

i dunno what liquid! deadlines was but i still think most of the comments made werent thought out well...

since it took the book so long to come out, everyone was expecting something absolutely breaktaking, but meh... i wasnt as impressed with 7 as i was for 1...

anyways... i still think the colors were fine, i dunno what all the fuss is about :P

oh yeah and chapel, that cinder pic, what if i post a link to my colored version... hehe dammit i wanna show off my art its not fair

dm: Joe had a year to draw it.. Tim probably had a few weeks to ink it.. and Liquid! probably got it a week or two before it was supposed to be published.

Make a new post with your Cinder pic if you want. I just wanted critiques for mine in my thread is all.

I had to read this didn't I... I'm already regretting it. Let me try to explain a little bit.

DIGITALJOHN, thanks for posting the comments, however that is actually one of the reasons I don't read the boards at JoeMadureira.com. I'd rather not know. If there are 10 great comments and one negative one, its going to be the negative one I'll remember. It never fails.

It's also difficult because oftentimes opinions are in stark contrast to each other. Statements like, "...[the colors were] more muted...but this too I liked", and, "...colors in this looked a lot more saturated..." are in direct contradiction. Whiich makes it near impossible to digest the critiques. You be the judge.

I wasn't going to chime in but I wanted to comment on A.Mounts quote:

quote
Quote:
In addition to this (while not having colored a comic piece in my life) I think Liquid!'s colors did suffer somewhat on the recent issue and my guess would be that this was due to the fantastic time and effort they've been sinking into every page of Soul Saga.

This is something I take very much offense to. It is presumptious and it insults our professional integrity. Something we've worked very hard for and I take great pride in. We've always chosen the hard road when it comes to quality. From doing pages at higher resolutions, to spending the extra time in special effects, as well as re-doing things until its done right, oftentimes at the cost of my weekends and personal life. For your information not a single page of SoulSaga was colored while we worked on BC because the deadlines aren't even remotely overlapping. We purposely do not take on more work than we can handle. Whatever differences you may perceive, I would attribute to the fact that we had very little time to color this issue, and that every page contained much more detail than usual, and thus took much longer to color. Plus certain stylistic elements are of Joe's choosing [the non-rendered flat whites in Gully's eyes comes to mind]. However, having said that, you are very much entitled to your opinion regarding the quality of our work. However, to presume that we would put more work into one book at the cost of another is an insult and just not true.

We've worked very hard to try to do the best job we are capable of doing under the circumstances and limits imposed upon us. It's NEVER for a lack of trying or us taking the "easy" road. We want to do the best job we can. Period. I wouldn't be working as hard as I am if I just wanted to crap something out. Trust me.

-c

PS: First off, thanks Chapel for sticking up for us! Nice to have that happen. You're right we had very little time to color the book, and yes, I much rather come here to talk about art in general rather than comics in particular. Comics is work. 'Art' is what I do to relax. Note I use the term "art" very loosely when associate to anything I do...

PPS: I haven't actually seen the actual issue yet, so I can't comment on how well our work printed. I.E I don't know if its muddy, dark, light, saturated, etc.

Ya know, I always feel the worst for the letterer tho. they get the pages last. and when things are late, they get shafted the most. I mean, I'd be disgruntled when I got the pages late but at least I wasn't last on the line...

and I haven't picked up BC7 yet... I've waited a year, I can wait a little longer.. *g*

I forgot about the letterer. How long does it really take a letterist though? Its just "select a font" isn't it? Sound effects occasionally.

Art ahh yes....All mine as of latly has been toward college so it is not fun anymore because I also have papers to do. ahhhh

I have absolutly no problem with the coloring. I think the combo of Liquid's coloring and Mad's art stile is one of my favorit combonations in comics. I am not kissing ass here eather... I thought this when I got my first BC comic back in the day.

Well comics aside just a question for LQ, if he reterns to this thread. What is a normal deadline for coloring a comic? Maybe someone else knows?
I am just curious because I am illustraiting a childrens story for my senior project and thought it would be interesting to compaire my speed to that of profesional work.

Blitz.....Come on LQ get with the Vader pic

I havnt been able to find BC #7, nor any other BC, or any soul saga back issues either, or any red star or aphrodite IX for that matter. stupid comic book store was always sold out, then they went out of business. gah. mail order here i come.

i really have nothing to contribute to this thread, though it should be intersting watching A.Mount try and disgorge his foot from his mouth

There's nothing to disgorge, but I appreciate the sentiment. The fact of the matter was that the colors somewhat lacked that usual Liquid! polish which was unfortunate, especially considering the time put into the pencils and the new inker. If it wasn't Chris and Aron's fault- all the better. Makes me a happier lad, but someone fecked up; I'd said that I would've guessed that was why. I guessed wrong, sodding editors. Oh well. We'll see what eight brings...

I haven't seen the new BC yet but I have to say that BC, for it's incredible pencil work and it's amazing coloring job, was the reason I started even looking at comics again. The last thing I'd seen before an excited friend showed me a BC issue was a flat colored Superman sitting in a rack at the 7-Eleven. Blech, looking at some of those made me remember why I didn't bother buying in the first place. Since I saw that BC I've bought the first comics I've had in quite a few years...truly inspirational work in it. Keep it going Liquid!

I'm sorry I started this whole topic, Chris if you're still looking at this thread I totally dis-agree with the stuff they posted. I love you work, and I think the coloring job is better than previous stuff, well actually it's all great work, keep it up, and don't listen to the bad stuff, there is far more good stuff to pay attention to. Sorry again. That's a good way to treat an inspiration huh? Sorry.

Re-read my last post - hope that didn't sound too harsh...

BLITZ: There really isn't a 'normal' time frame. The tricky thing is that even if a penciler gets a headstart they oftentimes get 2-4 inkers on board which means that the colorist don't get pages in small batches but everything at once. And the second we're given the pages, the editor generally is asking, "Where are the finished pages?". It is extremely rare that we get a steady diet of pages. Its just not how the business works. Vader is going to have to wait for some time... I gotta finish a couple of other things first... argh. But I looked at it the other day and WISH someone would have mentioned how screwy it looked...

CAPN: That kills me. I can't believe there's someone that wants the books but can't get them... we're doomed.

CHAP: I'm trying... just dying to get the site finished, and then x-mas is getting in the way, and every once in a while the last thing I want to do is sit in front of the computer some more to do my own doodles... I think that's why I do math on the can... sad life if you really think about it.

AMOUNT: Well, if you don't like the coloring it's our fault.

Guys, thanks for the kind words. I think there'll always be some people that enjoy what you do and some who don't. All I hope is that there's more that do than don't. However, I absolutely understand if someone didn't like a particular issue or job we've done. I don't think its possible to please everyone at all times, all I'm saying is that if it didn't turn out the way you wanted it wasn't for a lack of trying on our part. So accusing us of slacking, or just not caring couldn't be any further from the truth. That's all.

Hope we do better on no. 8!

Liquid!: Little too much info there. I think that should change everyone's view of you hehe. But, since you went there... doodl... errr sketch on toilet paper if you have to. I'm pretty sure once the art is scanned in it is "digital".
